Sure, different opinions exist for "best" carry gun. In a perfect, no budget, world, I might choose something different to carry.

So what?

In a perfect, no budget world, I would buy this gun anyway because it's a well built classic. It's like buying a Stanley Bedrock Plane, or a good used set of Snap On wrenches, or a W124 Mercedes.

You simply can't go wrong with a nice classic.

Astro, it's for my son. RECOIL GUNWORKS had a price reduction on them today. He bought the 64 with the Pachmayr grips for $329 and free shipping. That deal was only good for today.
Now maybe I can get my Speed Six back.

Sure will.
My son is visiting this weekend, but he won't have the gun until Wed. or Thursday next week. His next Saturday off will be March 14. I will ask him to come visit so we can go shoot that beast.

.38 special is an effective round. It's good for self defense. Moderate recoil makes it a good round for new, or occasional, shooters.

SG Ammo has some great prices on .38 right now:

Particularly this buy, for .23/round which is an outstanding deal for .38 special

I would be happy with any good brand of defensive ammo, Speer Gold Dot, Federal Hydra-shock, etc. it's a revolver, so they'll all work.

My .38 special S&W is a nice gun. Very well made. An LE turn in will have some cosmetic wear, but most of them just weren't shot much, so it should be in great mechanical shape.

I second the .357 Magnum as it has the mass to absorb some of the recoil and shooting .38 Special ammo in it is a real pleasant experience as in my S&W 586.

I agree. A .357 would have been a better choice. But, he couldn't get a S&W .357 for the price he paid for the 64. And, he has YET to show it to me, or if he has received it YET!
