RP Filter Death Rattle

OK, so I decided to step outside the box on an OCI for my Mustang, possibly trying to "invent a better mouse trap", if you will. The car has been fed a steady diet of Motorcraft and Mobil 1 oil and a MC or M1 filter for it's entire life. I built up a stash of Royal Purple oil and filters during the Pep Boys sale from last year so I decided to use it for this OCI. Out came the M1 5w30 / MC FL-820S and in went the RP 5W-20 / RP 20-820. The start up noise is HORRENDOUS after the car sits for more than a few hours. My brother, who was at least 100 ft. away when I started the car one morning, described it as the "death rattle". The catch is that it doesn't rattle every start up even if it has been sitting for 24 hours or more, but it happens enough that I'm concerned. Could this be a fluke failure of the ADBV on this particular RP filter or have others experienced the same thing? Never had this problem with the MC or M1 filters or various oil weights. I'm contemplating pulling the filter off and replacing with another FL-820S. Thoughts?

I myself would revert to a MC filter.

I don't or have never had a Mustang or any other car with that motor. But I do remember from owning my Taurus that it really really really liked its MC filters due to the design. Perhaps just a bad RP filter but I'd swap back to a MC one for the meantime and cut the RP one open to take a look inside.

Like everyone`s saying, pull the RP filter, and replace it with an MC one (then pour the right amount of makeup oil into the engine since you`ll lose around a 1/2 quart with the filter pull) and see what happens. If you still get the startup noise,as weird as it may seem, your engine may not *like* pao oils. Just a hunch though.

Thanks for all the responses. It was driving me crazy so I went and pulled the RP filter a few minutes ago and replaced it with another FL-820S (my wife thinks I've officially lost it). I somewhat primed the filter and got the oil level back to normal after start up. After sitting for a few minutes the motor seems back to it's old self on start up. I will know more in the morning when I leave for work. I also sent an email to Royal Purple about the filter. Hopefully this is a fluke thing because I have a bunch of these filters on the shelf...

+1 on changing the filter.
1) Save the RP filter, cut it open, take pics, and post here.
2) A real BITOG member would not wait until they left for work to see if it's corrected. Do it at 3:10 am.

Got a friend who has a 2005 GT with Royal Purple HPS oil and RP oil filter with none of the problems your having.

Try another filter maybe?

I would not cut it open yet. RP may warranty it (hopefully) and send you a new one for free, but cutting it open may void your warranty and waste a filter.

So, contact them first and see what they say before hacking it apart.

I'd pull the filter and go back to the Motorcraft filters you've used in the past and see what happens. I would not cut open the RP filter, I'd contact them and give them a chance to help you.

Agreed. Don't cut it until you hear back. Most likely RP will want the filter back.

I'd also bet you got one with a defective ADBV. You never had problems with the Mobil 1 filters. RP and M1 are both Champion filters. Most likely they're the exact same filter, the only difference being the color.

I ran an RP 20-820 for 10K miles and two years... no rattle at any time My 5.4L has not rattled on any filter I've installed, to include the MC, P1 and RP. Within a couple of months I will be DP testing a large number of different brands of filters.

I don't think it would be a brand thing. Might be an individual filter thing. Modulars have been known to rattle on MC filters too, or any other filter regardless of price.

A bit of advice... wait a while before you change the filter and let the current one go thru a few weeks of heat cycles so as to allow the ADBV to perhaps conform a bit better to the sealing surface on the tapping plate.

I'm swimming against the stream here, but I'd cut it open and video tape the whole process. You know the manufacturer will not admit to any problems with their product and if it's similar to another manufacturer, they will say that it's your fault for dropping it and denting it.

I ve never "seen" problems with ADBV pulled from my engines that experienced supposed adbv issues. I dont think you would be able "see" any issue with the adbv. Some here may gve a hint on performing a simple bench test to investigate the veracity of the ADBV. The Assembly spring could be fatigued - but usually that is not seen on units that use coiled sring assembly for preloading the stack.
Givin MY past experienced this "loss of prime" after an OCI is a more common issue than many would care to admit. I will say Ive had excellent luck with ACDELCO champ filters.
IIRC the OEM factory filter that said "FORD" on my 2011 DOHC ranger 4-banger engine looked like a Champ design also - not a motorcraft/puro.
