Im actually considering trying it for a couple of back to back runs just to see for myself as well.

Maybe I would actually like it and it would perform well in my application

Ha! Oddly enough, that was the main reason I tried it and I have a very good UOA now of the 5W20. And I agree with NHNemi, there certainly isn't a body of evidence at BITOG to claim RP is a poor oil. As with any oil, there are places where it might not be a good fit, and no oil can fully make up for poor environmental or engine conditions.

I do think RP is overpriced. But I think that of M1, PP, Amsoil and the rest. I think I can get better bang for my buck, in my circumstances, with a good conventional oil, but that's not a blanket statement. I see places for the higher dollar oils and they can pay back in many situations. It's all about weighing all the factors and making the right choice. There's no mythical "one-size-fits-all."

If I were into the whole "better living through chemistry" lifestyle, as always I would really crave a hit of whatever JohnBrowning is smoking. It obviously does a great job of altering reality!

I consistently see RP within $0.50 to $1.00 of the same price as M1. PP and RTS are indeed significantly cheaper, no argument there. I've never seen Redline consistently cheaper than RP, rather the opposite in fact. Can't say anything about Amsoil since I've only got one store around here that carries it- I'm sure I could order it through one of the guys here for a competitive price, or lower than RP.

That's neither to defend or accuse RP, and frankly I think all oils have a lot of profit margin for *someone* built into the price. Just stating a fact, RP is priced consistently with other specialty oils.

I buy my RP at the local Toyota dealer here. Oil is $6 a quart and Max Gear is $6 a quart as well. I also bought a case of their 15W40 on Ebay recently. With free shipping it came to just a bit over $5 a quart :^)

Trying to make it into an extended drain oil pretending that it has better additives than say Amsoil or M1-Ep or Castrol Edge is simply over reaching and goes against what this site is all about. ROYAL PURPLE IS NOT AN EXTENDED DRAIN OIL.

How often should I change Royal Purple in my passenger car?

Royal Purple recommends following the manufacturer’s maintenance intervals while the vehicle is under factory warranty. In clean engines that are no longer under warranty, oil change intervals may be extended up to every 12,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first. Oil filter changes should be done as recommended by the filter’s manufacturer and oil should be topped off as needed.

In dirty engines, Royal Purple recommends the standard 3,000 to 5,000 mile oil and filter change interval until the engine oiling system is clean and free of deposits left by lower quality oils and / or poor maintenance or mechanical problems. This will allow time to gradually remove existing deposits without overloading the oiling system. Mechanical problems such as fuel dilution, coolant leaks into the crankcase, poor air filtration and / or failure to maintain proper oil level are all detrimental factors to the service life of any engine oil. Any one of these factors can significantly shorten the useful service life of any oil.

You threw out the 5 quart M1 for $22 at Walmart.

That comes out to $4.40 per quart.

Now for those that need 0w40, RP starts looking really good =)

Anyway, the point is RP has a Tbn of 12 and it can be obtained locally. It's not a bad oil and it has SL levels of P for those that prefer higher amounts.

It's a very good oil. Several of my customers are running it 15K in their Toyotas. It's laughable how much full strenght black angus bull-fertilizer is spread on here. I don't like Amsoil's marketing but so what, their oils are great. Do I care about RP marketing? Not in the least. If you wanted to be technical, Mobil's marketing has the most foul stench of anybody's but that stops nobody from paying their exhorbitant marketing costs that go into every quart.

Do people really give a [censored] about what I or anybody else thinks about an oil? Really I mean come on, unless you are getting kick backs or something why do you really give a [censored] if someone bashes a [censored] oil?? Is it taking money out of your pocket because I say RP sucks? Amsoil sucks? Pennzoil Platinum sucks??

Just don't see why one or two people have to get so bent out of shape because someone say's Royal Purple is over-priced and a marginal performer at best! I could give a rats [censored] if someone every day says PP, Valvoline, RP, Castrol, etc... is the worst oil out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't lose sleep over it like some people. "I have been a devoted user since 1990!!" Well congratulations, good for you! "What? How dare you say my beloved RP is a Grp III, and not a good performer, well here comes more paragraphs saying the same thing over and over.......

Because it (the misrepresentation) impacts people's decisions, especially when it is repeated over and over and over by the same people.

Five years ago I wouldn't have touched Redline oil based on the junk that was posted here.

I don't care if someone thinks the sky is green. But I will ask them to show me some evidence of the sky actually being green.

If we don't care what others "think" about oil... um... why are we reading this again?

LOL,...i'm not here to say if RP is good or bad, just that, you can walk into any advanced auto parts around here and there it is,just above the mobil 1 and there is none above the RP on the rack.

apparently,AAP has sort of a grading and pricing system where the higher up you reach is what they consider to be "better" oils.

the prices in there are $8 for mobil 1 and $9 for the RP.

somehow, this takes RP off the "boutique" list for me,LOL.

don't read anything into this because i'm not giving any opinion of good or bad one way or the other, just what AAP does.

personally,i find both these prices too high in there.

i wonder if we will ever see RP at walmart? it would add a splash of color to the bottles already there,lol....and convinient for those who like it.

I don't think so, after disaster experience with high price Castrol Edge, Walmart learned that expensive oil doesn't sell in their stores.

Nah. RP is a little higher, but both oils are about half a buck cheaper here than you quoted.

Both Walmarts here sell it. Only the 5W30 and the 10W30 grades.

They dropped the price from like $36 to $26 pretty fast though. And edge only comes in 5w30 and 10w30 in the US. In my Walmart it is relegated over in a corner by the clearance summer stuff and motorcycle oil.
