And I bet your fuel economy has suffered from the switch

It seems to be one of the first things to come up anytime someone brings up running a thicker oil. I understand that it is possible and should happen in theory, but in the real world I personally have not noticed it yet. I have about 1000 miles on the 40wt in my prius and so far it has made zero changes in fuel economy.

"SALE!" Save "UP TO 70% on selected items"...

"You can save UP TO 30% on your auto insurance by switching to..."

NEW! IMPROVED! 0W-5 EXTRAordinary Mark IV NOW! with UNOBTANIUM can give you UP TO 5% better gas mileage...

Please note that these three ads all limit the amount you can "save" by stating that you'll save UP TO a certain amount but make no claims what-so-ever about what your MINIMUM savings will be.

In effect, a guarantee that you won't save 70% on most items on sale, that your insurance premium may only be 5% lower, and that gas mileage may or may not increase, but in no case will it ever increase over the 5% figure.

Note: your individual results may vary.

Cheers!

p.s. These claims of huge gas mileage changes when using modern oils are, for the most part, pure Phoooy IMHO.

Makes wonder if I can use my stash of M1 0W40 in my Gen2 Prius. I use 0W30 now, but am out of it and also sold the car I used 0W40 in. Soooo...I have 14 qts of 0w40 lying around with nothing to use it in.

What does your manual recommended for oil when temperatures are constant over...40F ?

Manual recommends 5W30 only iirc. But many users use 0w30, some even use 0w20. I have been sticking with 0W30. The idea of blending 0w20 and 0w40 is intriguing.

The engine in the Prius and the engine in most Subarus share very little similarities besides the fact they both run on gasoline.

-Much lighter duty cycle
-Much lower specific output
-Much lower fuel consumption
-No turbo (it's generally the turbo crowd that loved T6 - I was one of them)

T6 may not be an extended drain oil in a Subaru/Ford F350/Chevy Dmax/etc. but almost anything becomes an extended drain oil in a Prius.
