The fact is that Shell Rotella is a mundane oil at the best .
FACTS ... at bobistheoilguy

Funny stuff, because we know all other oil companies put a full ingredient list on their bottles of oil

That word FACT, I do not think it means what your think it means. Sounds like you have a bias against rotella and that is fine just don't go spouting off about "facts" when you mean your opinions.

Wrong I use it in my Toyota Tacoma.
But I realize it is what it is .. a good mundane cheap priced oil .

Bob :
Shell Rotella T6 arguably the best in the Shell Rotella line is rated by Shell @ MBenz 228.31

Schaeffer's S 9000
is rated by Schaeffer's @ MBenz 229.51

Like I stated it is mundane, sorry for the badnews

You're comparing two different family of specs, MB HD (228.31) and MB passenger (229.51). Not a valid comparison. Might as well compare SM to CJ-4.

Also, you realize it is simply impossible for S9000 to truly meet MB 229.51? It has too many additives and is too thick. A CJ-4 oil cannot meet Euro passenger vehicle specs.

Shell is 100% correct that T6 meets 228.31, that's an MB HD spec. 229.51 is a Euro passenger vehicle spec.

Shell Rotella T6 actually carries the Mercedes approval. Schaeffer Supreme 9000 doesn't; it just says "formulated to meet and exceeds" [sic].

Also, MB 229.51 isn't anywhere on Schaeffer's spec list. Maybe you misread the list: 228.3, 228.31, 228.5, 229.1, 229.3, and 229.5. No 229.51 there.

And to be fair, Rotella T6 doesn't meet 229.51 either!

Thanks for the scan.

I can't help but notice the label says "conventional 5w-40." I didn't know there was any such thing. Interesting, even more so than the spec list discrepancy.

Anyway...

Any response on the "recommended" vs. "approved" confusion, or are you just going to let that one drop?

Been beat to death time and time again here.
If anyone isn't aware of the difference they should use the search feature .

Agreed. That's why I was wondering why you portrayed them as equivalent. If you are aware of the difference, that must have been a deliberate misrepresentation on your part rather than simple ignorance. That's cool. As long as we're keeping everything on the table...

Since we are talking misrepresentation .....

Explain to me how you can tell me that the company that manufacturers this oil is wrong to say it is within MB 229.51 spec and you are right ?

I mean they would have a lot to lose if a thing went wrong with a system or part because of it .... I mean it being in writing and all.

What would you lose here on the internet on a thread that will be buried and dead in 2 months ...?
NOTHING

Good question. Since I never made that claim, I don't have an answer for you.

Ummm-it actually says on the label that it EXCEEDS 229.51-whatever that means-but, if you go to Schaeffer's website, it DOESN'T list 229.51 on their list of approvals, 9000 is NOT on Mercedes-Benz's approved list of oils, and the sulfated ash content is too high (not a low SAPS oil @ 1% ash). C'mon, this is BITOG, we're supposed to be skeptical of EVERYTHING here!! And no, I'm not an Amsoil dealer!

I didn't mean to back any one up or make any statements for or against T6.

I have zero experience with other oils at extended drains in my car with my specific application, so I really can't comment on that. All I know is that 7600 miles in an STI is pretty good for any oil, and most guys wouldn't even run a boutique oil like Redline, Amsoil, etc for as long as I did with an oil that costs half as much. I don't plan to try any of these boutique oils, since 7000 miles seems like a pretty good, conservative OCI to me. If I do use another oil I'll make sure to get a used oil analysis for curiosity's sake and post it up here.

I'll break it down very simply. Said spec. says sulfated ash must be less x%, for some x that I can't recall off-hand. Schaeffer's product for #9000 SUPREME 9000 SAE 5W-40 data sheet says the sulfated ash (1.0%) of this oil is much greater than x%. You knew this not long ago.

You'll break it down but you do not recall LOL

First the MB spec is about a whole slew of things (my turn) that I do not recall. just kidding jag
It entails
HTHS
OCI
SAPS in total not just SA
it is based on the European ACEA oil specs not API or anything else .

MB approved Shell Rimulia as a 229.51 oil and I was able to determine it has SA listed at .9 now that was before Shell began its purge of all oil ingredient info on the web posted as PDF material (IMO to conceal how mundane or if you prefer how average it really is)
Want to argue about .9 VS: 1.0 do it with someone else.
I am moving on .

PS:
Chrysler has approved any oil that is 228.51 up to 229.51 for use in all its Spriter Vans that have MBenz engines excluding 229.3 and 229.5
MBenz states in Europe that only 229.51 can be used

What does Chrysler know that MBenz does not know

Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately if you've had some of the experiences I've had with dealer service departments & warranty diesel work), Mercedes has taken the Sprinters back from Chrysler, therefore M-B is the point man for the Sprinter now. I can testify that the corporate Valvoline Instant Oil Change that changes my co.'s 6.0 Ford diesel's oil uses Premium Blue Extreme on several newer 3.0 diesel Sprinters w/DPF-I told him about the Synpower MST oil, but I don't think he can get it. I'm going to ask the 2 guys I work with that have them to see what the Dodge dealer is using in the Sprinters. Most Dodge dealers I've had my Cummins(es) at knew less about diesels than I did, if they worked on them at all. For instance, my buddy up in NW Ohio (Wapakoneta) had his '09 Sprinter at the dealer for 3 weeks before they figured out it was a fuel problem, not an engine/injector problem.

Sounds like a lot of this is over your head. Might want to just admit you don't know and don't care, and move on.

What does Chrysler know that MBenz does not know

Chrysler = USA
Mercedes = Europe

Different continents, different recommendations. Happens all the time.
