Rock Auto? Legit place to buy GM oil filters like PF63? Never bought from them before, prices are cheap makes me wonder if parts are legit

I bought three PF63s from Rock Auto some months back. If they are counterfeit, the are the best replicas I've ever seen. They do seem to ship them without packaging. I suspect they buy them by the case and ship them out. No biggie as they were in excellent shape when I got mine. But as always, YMMV.

After the fact you can track where RA shipped from by googling the address. Its usually from a reputable wholesaler.

I have heard of counterfeit spark plugs on RA - I think ToyotaNation?

One issue from RA is it seems they often ship us the returns - so the wholesaler pawns there returns on RA customer. Always possible the return was fake?

Other than the dealer I suppose nowhere is 100% anymore.

Price your price with a shipping quote-- it seems to lessen many peoples' excitement. If your can receive packages at your work, try their address too, it's usually cheaper. The parts are as legit as they can be anywhere as they come straight from the source, barring returned items fraud which you can get anywhere.

You can purchase with confidence from Rock Auto and they sell "better" filters then the AC Delcos as well 😉

Rock Auto is safe to buy from :)

The regular inventory items are fine, usually recent stock, but the wholesaler closeouts can be old stuff.

I have filled most of a freezer door with RockAuto magnets. I have never had an issue with counterfeit parts from them.

Try to order as much as you can at once to reduce the cost of shipping per item. Otherwise, it may be cheaper to get filters from Amazon or Walmart.

From the Advance Auto Parts site:

Under the Magnuson – Moss Warranty Act, 15U.S.C. SS 2301-2312 (1982) and general principles of the Federal Trade Commission Act, a manufacturer may not require the use of any brand of filter (or any other article) unless the manufacturer provides the item free of charge under the terms of the warranty.

Rockauto is fine to buy from them. But they do sell cheap parts because they can, and those do not last(mostly suspension). They also seem to be a good supplier of "exotic" brands the chain B&Ms do not stock, like Advics, Aisin, AcDelco Pro, Hella light bulbs etc; part numbers to find the OEM cross reference; and the closeout wipers have served their purpose well.

Just make sure it all ships from same Waterhouse.

Ya just don’t know what you’re gonna get with Rock Auto. I’ve never heard of anyone getting counterfeit from there but defects and outdated filters 4 sure.

Yes, GM or any other car makers don't require people to use the OEM brand filter or parts. If they did, your statement would apply per the MMWA.

But to clarify - when a vehicle is under warranty, if someone used an aftermarket filter (or any non-OEM aftermarket part) that failed and caused damage, the vehicle manufacturer can deny warranty. They would say go make a claim with the aftermarket company if they have a warranty. Lots of people think the MMWA protects them with that too, but it really doesn't.

I wouldn't worry about phonies from Rock Auto but maybe more dented or minor rusted filters. I hope you are buying a larger quantity or bundling the filters with some other parts otherwise the shipping costs will eat up any savings achieved.
