Richard Petty's 1970 Superbird

Made it to the Petty Museum at around noon today. They also do a lot of restorations. A 69 Charger on the left and a silver 68 Charger being restored. How bout a convertible Superbird…?

A couple more. Many people might not know that Richard drag raced a Hemi powered 64 Barracuda for 1 season. Also the 67 Hemi Plymouth that won 27 races in 1967. Edit: Forgot to mention that’s his dads 1958 number 42 Olds in the background!

What a great video!
No loud music.
Lot's of visceral, organic sounds (rolling car on gravel, mechanical work, changing gears, roar of the engine/exhaust).
Very well done and thank you for sharing, OP.

While at the time that car was probably cutting edge as far as safety wise for the driver, looking at the video I don't think I'd like to crash in it at 200mph
Race drivers had guts back in the day. Nascar today is ridiculous with all the banging on each other now.

Petty also ran a BOSS 429 powered Galaxy 500 at one point, I have a model of it.
Petty switched to Ford for the 1969 season and won 10 races in a Ford Talladega Torino. Petty fans went crazy in the 69 season! He went back to Plymouth in the 1970 season. Don’t know about any other Ford that the Pettys ever campaigned though…ICBW.

Yes, that's the car, was a Torino not a Galaxy, doh!

Just passed a Superbird or Daytona in Vegas on Flamingo just west of Durango about 2 hours ago. Couldn't believe it. Didn't get a good look as there was an accident ahead and I couldn't focus on the car. Blue paint was a little rough, but from what I saw it could have been the real thing.

I remember seeing those mopars sitting and forsale at $500. or so back in the day. Just wish I had the space back then to keep them.
I was going to mention this, but you beat me to it.
There was a time, up through the eighties, when what are now six or seven figure cars could be bought for very little money.
After all, who wanted a clapped out 426 Hemi car, or an old Ferrari, Lambo, Aston, Maser or Porsche?
Those days have sadly passed and "collectible" cars have become an expensive auction game.

we used to sneak around on the Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth lots after hours to drool over all of the muscle machinery they had back around 1968 / 1969 & 1970 when the lots where just so full of those Scat Pack cars!

I remember in the late 60s going to a local Dodge dealer to see **** Landy . He was doing a drag racing class and gave many tips on increasing the performance of your MOPAR....and yes he had a big cigar with him....
