Rev matching on downshifts

I’d rather wear brake pads than add unnecessary wear to my drivetrain/engine/accessories coming to a stop. No one I know is impressed with constant downshifting. That’s for a racecourse.

I think downshifting actually helps the wear as it is force being applied in the opposite direction. I downshift all the time and have never worn out a clutch. Throw out bearing went bad at 187k miles....

I have never rev matched any of my F-bodies. The 98 was just at 400HP to the wheels. The 01 was over 490. The WS6 is 440 to wheels.
What are guys driving 30hp cars with glass transmissions and paper mache engines? You do it around town? I see it at the track.

I understand Semis but a 260 HP WRX? A 123 HP Focus?

Exactly. It's a track/performance driving technique as far as I'm concerned but everybody do them...whatever makes you feel good.

Yeah I am not saying don't do it if you want to. I just don't have a reason to do it on my way to get groceries.

Unless you want to make sure everyone knows you are a rad manuals4lyfe guy :ROFLMAO: I actually had a kid tell me he lets his car roll back at lights before taking off to make sure folks know. Good lord.

LOL Imagine his disappointment on a road that goes downhill.... A missed opportunity there to show the world he's a rad manual driver!

Do people doenshift to a stop all the time? Why? You can leave it in the highest gear until nearing thr stop. Smooth driving no dramas.

NO WAY to slow from third to second gear to take a 90 deg intersection turn with some speed without rev matching - or at least blipping the throttle to downshift to get close to the anticipated engine speed. This is a everyday driving technique. I think you " sporty guys" are doing this without thinking about it.

I guess I just wait until the RPMs are matched/close enough during the turn before letting out the clutch? I never even thought about this whole blip thing until recently and I've had manuals since the early '90s. I somehow have gotten by?

If going from third to second gear, how is the RPMs going to increase when down shifting if you don't rev-match?

Do you let the clutch slip long enough so the engine RPMs match the wheel speeds?

I go down a gear when I'm getting off the highway, just because then I don't have to touch the brakes until I'm at the top of the exit ramp.

Watch tedward take a corner from 10:57 marker in this video. Then the better around town video capture in earlier timestamps Man I'd love to have this Ariel Atom for the Spring through Summer.

So if you are downshifting from 4th to 2nd, doing a 90deg turn in town, you don't rev match? Not a little blip to bring up the revs? Seems odd, why drive manual at all then? Do you just coast and slip the clutch slowly until it brings up the revs? Or do a lurch on a faster shift?

I'm certainly not racing everywhere I go, but I rev match all the time, because its smoother mostly, and no one hears me with the stock exhaust, and its good practice for a fun backroad or the track.
