I have a collection of some 20 used filter gaskets. They are in such nice shape that I could not bear to throw them away.

Since I don't need the old filter gaskets for filters, I wonder if I can use them for something else, maybe to bind extension cords or something.

I was trying to figure a way to make garage decorations out of them. Maybe a glue pair of mouse ears on an empty can of something...use a cut one for the tail... stuff like that.
Or string them together like we used to do rubber bands when we were kids. Who can make the longest oil filter gasket chain?
Simple. Just use RTV!

That's kinda what I was going for ..it would be appropriate to hang over the work bench during the holidays. The problem is I don't have enough orange filter gaskets to do every other one. I didn't buy enough of those filters in my gasket collection history.

Orange gaskets? What are they from, Frams?
Some high end filters like the Purolator PureOne use an orange silicone gasket.

I'd sure like to get my hands on a few of those. When I build my filter o-ring chain, I could put a bright one every 10th ring to make it easy to keep count.
A chain of filter O-rings might just work nicely as a bungee cord substitute. Soon as I can find my stash of used rings I'll try it out.
Another thing is maybe could use them to make a homemade crossbow. Should have quite the snap!

I don't plan to try this one as it could leave one on the Darwin Award list if not done just right.

I wonder ..with the proper adhesive, you could probably permanently attach them to drinking glasses. Sorta like a built in coaster. They should be dishwasher safe.

Well, I spent nearly an hour searching for my stash of old filter gaskets. I see them every so often and probably moved them the last time because they were on the pegboard, but are not now. I did manage to get two gaskets from filters on the work bench that I didn't get around to cutting open yet. They string together nicely though it throws a curve in at the knot. It's okay though as that will just help in the bungieeness of the whole string. Someday, I'll find them. Have to figure what to do with different sizes, most of mine are from FL1A, but a couple smaller FL400s.
Now it might be fun to test the strength. Anyone with an old fashioned weight set? Hang weights from one gasket and see how much it takes to break the gasket. I am guessing the gaskets will easily sustain 200+ pounds. We might even be able to connect rear bumpers and do a truck pull with these things hooked up in tandem.
Now another idea is could the gasket be used as a teething ring? Wife will be watching a neighbor's baby next thursday. Would be worth a try. What the parents don't know won't hurt them. I doubt the kid would choke as the ring is too big. Only question is whether these gaskets have any lead in them. I am not worried about the oil as I washed them really well.

Let's have a filter gasket chain contest. Who can get up the longest chain. Feel free to solicit other BITOG members to send you their used gaskets if they are not constructing their own chain. But please don't pirate new gaskets at Walmart. I don't want to see a bunch of gasketless new filters on the shelf (not that I buy filters or much of anything at Walmart).
