I had a carrier that the builder installed in 2002. Died after 10 years (heat exchanger cracked). Now I've got a Ducane (rebranded Lennox). They don't last like the old models used to.
That was a unit manufactured back when they were designed to last 30 years. I don't think they are now. Now we have electronic ignitors, microprocessor logic boards, EC motors, R410a pressures, and heat exchangers built to an efficiency standard rather than durability standard.
Replaced with another Lennox 95% efficiency G71 in 2009 and it is very quiet and I haven't touched a thing on it since. Fan has been running almost constantly as well. I guess it is almost 14 years old now. It gets used a lot in MN too.
I have a luxaire in our home. Had to replace the control valve and it was easy peasy done last winter. It must be close to 30 yr old. I run the pilot all year to keep it dry and also keep the chimney warm. I use a vacuum and clean out any accumulation from the bottom of the unit.
30 yrs... wow. Looks like I'm gonna end up with a maytag r8he for around $5800 installed. It's "on sale" and the other two quotes were $7800 and $11k for Goodman and tempstar. So based purely on what cash I have available I went with the cheapest. AMG payment is $500 a month, so I don't have cash flow like I used too... Thanks to everyone for their input, I appreciate all who responded.
Builder installed Heil still going strong into its 16th year.
I think when asking this question climate plays a role how long anything lasts and how many hours of run time which is impossible to know as it even goes down to the temperature one sets.
I agree with the other. Install is important, think any brand is a crap shoot.
