I am working on my fiance's VW Jetta 2.0

Looking at the airbox looks like the amsoil filter is not sealing the box the way it was designed to be sealed. The lip that you find on OEM style paper filters seal the lid to the lower part of the box. I found dirt, sand, and insects on the top of the air filter (engine side). I'm sure the foam filtered the air coming thru the intake snorkel, but what's the point if it gets past it somewhere else.

I notice this kinda stuff more now since I'm an junior BITOGer.

Yesterday, I replaced the ITG in my Passat back to a paper Purolator(US made, more pleats than Chinese made).

Though the filter lip of the foam ITG seems a little loose fitting around the airbox 15k miles ago, am surprised it did the job pretty well I take(sealing and filtering). The underside of the airbox cover looks pretty clean as whistle(like 15k ago)..ditto on the clean engine filter side as well.

I went back to paper as I have concerns reading about raising Si in your motor oil using aftermarket filters...but am keeping the ITG and will be cleaning it for storage.

"Clean as whistle" look is not necessarily an indication of good filtration.
Only an UOA can roughly determine the filter's efficiency.

Well, at this stage finding out the ITGs tacky-thick oiled foam filtering efficiency is a little too late(Duh!).

See, the old GC was pulled using a frequently used Tempo oil boy extractor(sedimented bottom, shared with the 190E)..so contaminate-wise one would get an inaccurate uoa reading.

A uoa of the GC taken from the pump would be POINTLESS..

I know that the oiltype filters work good in old engines, but new types of engines with air sensors get oil on them from the oiled filter and malfunction.K&N has been a huge culprit for problems in new diesel designs. This might be the reason for Amsoil going with the EA and steping out of the oiled filter business. I am sure K&N and others will follow.
