Rental Car .....good times

Guess I`m even worse! I`ve always washed/detailed any rental cars I`ve had to keep for any extended period of time. I`ll make sure all fluids are good and add if need be. I just always treat other people`s property as if it were my own.

cyclic is the man. oil is oil. You guys should be glad he didn't add crisco

ok, I will give him even more credit and say his heart was in the right place... especially after hearing what some of you yahoo's responded with.

No one is asking you to be Mother Teresa of the auto world.

Ronald Reagan had a wonderful quote.. it went like this:

"There is no limit to what you can accomplish
if you don't care who gets the credit.

Somewhere down the road or in times past, your butt was saved by someone who did not care that they got recognized or reimbursed. You will never know nor should you who it was.. that would spoil the whole idea.

The greatest generation of WWII is a perfect example of this. The sacrifice made on the idea that there is higher purpose and meaning for what you do outweighs the lack of acknowledgment or compensation.

Random acts of kindness and respect as well as responsibility = a society that does well.

I used to put quarters in meters that were expired. I change my neighbors oil in his car.. for free. Why? He's a good person and has always been nice to me and my son... I take good care of my company car and do the labor on it for free.. Why? Why not?? its the right thing to do... Believe it or not sometimes you just need to do what's right because IT IS!

or, you could just realize that there are some good people left in this world. isn't that how it's supposed to be anyhow? its funny how when we get used to things being bad and are used to getting lied to, that we almost come to expect it. what a sad situation...

In 2001 while on a business trip to the UK I rented, from Avis at Heathrow, a Fiat. It had only 1,000 miles on it. It was a real nice car. I got less than 50 miles from Heathrow when the engine seized from lack of oil

. I'm glad I rented a cell phone also. At least I was able to call Avis to have them pick me up and bring me back to Heathrow to get another car, which they did in a timely manner. After a 6 to 7 hour trans Atlantic overnight flight I should not be expected to "check" the rental car out to see whether it's "road worthy". What are we paying the rental car companies for?

awwwwww pooooor baby!!! I bet you walk across streets without looking because you think that since you are in the crosswalk, its not YOUR responsibility to make sure the cars stop.

Meanwhile, when you are laying dead of massive blunt trauma, all your rationalization will be for what? Who lost in the end? You. Your time, your life and your money. You will be the loser EVERYTIME!

In fact, the very thought process that YOU go through thinking it should be other people's responsibility to do their job, should tell you that you should be even MORE vigilant against irresponsibility.

Relying on others is a great pastime of most people today. And then they cry when inevitably they get let down.

Some example? Hmmmm... government bailouts come to mind, relying on social security to be there when you need it.

You know [censored] well that humans rarely have anything other than their own best interest in mind.. so that should SCREAM to you, to check that oil.

People should, but they don't.

How 'bout you be the exception rather than the statistic?

I bought an ex-rental with 9400 miles and 30K miles later it's had a few problems, but none of them have been oil related...engine purrs quietly and pulls hard. Transmission shifts great too. Problems have been related to the alignment (caused by the dealership after my purchase) and a few electrical issues (3 failed tire pressure sensors, failed keyless entry system)--none of which would have been the result of abuse as a rental.

If anything, rentals get better care than some personally owned vehicles. I've met plenty of people who don't bother to do any maintenance or even bother to change the oil, they just keep adding more.

I don't think the guy I bought my Cherokee Sport from did a [censored] thing for the 155K miles he owned it. I've pulled out the original battery, replaced the original belt, replaced the original brake rotors and probably the original pads, etc. It did have a Fram filter on it though, so he changed the oil at least once. Also, I don't think Jeep offered a "matte green" finish in '99, so I assume he just neglected the paint, too.

Never buy a used rental car.

I was always taught to treat others stuff the same as you would your own. Now, if you can honestly say you would put used engine oil in one of your vehicles, then carry on. If you would never put used engine oil in your vehicle, then you have a serious character flaw, and those who believe in karma will be waiting for you to get "yours" in return.

I guess it's too much to expect people to do their job that they are paid for. I do the job I'm paid for. Maybe I'm too old and living in the past. And yes, I do assume responsibility when crossing roads and driving. Your analogy does not make any sense. You compare someone who is being paid to perform a job versus a motorist on the road

you would put brand new oil in a rental? were in a recession. Enterprise is taking the shortcut not the poster

yeap, you even get an oil change and they will take that off your bill. I rented a taurus for a 4200 mile road trip and when I asked, they said just do the oil change.

I rent from avis only as enterprise locations are franchises and they care less about the cars quality.

I know you weren't talking to me, but yes, I would. I rented a Dodge Stratus some years ago and the dipstick did not reach oil. After adding 2 qt, the oil on the dipstick was thick and gooey. I did not mention to rental co for fear of bring blamed if car developed problems. I did what I felt was right.

You're not paying attention. He put in used oil because it was the only oil he had at the time.

He has no character flaw. That rests on the shoulders of you boneheads who can't/won't recognize that the OP did the right thing.

He did something that he wasn't obligated to do, and he worked with what he had available to him at the time...What part of that is difficult to understand?

I must say I had a good laugh reading some responses. People jumping to the conclusion that I have a character flaw because I didn't baby the car like it was mine.

I didn't feel bad about putting that oil in there because I am not a total oil nut, I feel that oil is just a lubricant (not like some who feel it is god's honey :) ), if you don't have enough in the crankcase you have problems. I had to use what I had, I added 2 litres of oil which was better than what was in the crankcase. When I returned the car, the Enterprise rep told me they change oil about every 20k kms. So if nobody had checked the oil after me that engine would be in a world of hurt. I would have put new oil in it had I not had to get up at 5 am the next day, didn't feel like going out when I noticed it was low (in my garage at night). So I did the next best thing.

Thanks for the chuckles to those who got worked up over it though.

i was in las vegas watching rental cars pull the old ferris bueller "flying over the hilly road" trick on way to grand canyon...09 g-6s getting pounded on one of arizonas worst roads...i rented a cobalt for a day and oil had just been changed...oil is oil, i was talking to this biker type dude at china mart and he said if his bike got low on oil he would just add whatever used [censored] was around haha...i couldnt bring myself to do that unless i had to...more $$ for smokes and beer i imagine

cyclic did ok...most people dont give a s--- about their own oil, much less a rental...i cehecked oil on my rental at sa-mor in vegas...it was clean, full and recently changed...the attendent knew people beated on them
