I am new to this board but I have to throw this out there. What is with some folks on here and there utter disdain or shall I say hatred of Red Line oil? I guess it's like the Chevy vs. Ford thing. I think Red Line is a great oil, better than most, especially for highly stressed applications. I have used it extensively in the past with great results. And I know its history as far as UOA's go which doesnt mean anything to me. UOA's do not tell the entire story, especially if they are not translated correctly. I know people talk trash about Amsoil too, which I also like and use, but thats more for there sales approach. Besides UOA results, why do those of you on this forum not like Red Line?

I reckon it's great but now only use the p/s, diff, and gear oils. I may use Redline eng oil in our recently acquired used BMW as it's a weekend only car making the exhorbitant cost worth it.

Some oil analysis aren't the best.

...they make good fuel system cleaner.

There are a few who don't like Redline (or anything over .99/qt) but there have been very few with "utter disdain or shall I say hatred of Red Line oil".....do you have a link or three?

Look at the cost per mile of using Redline. Compare that to the cost per mile of gasoline. I think you will find that the cost of redline is insignificant in this regard. But if it comes down to a case of beer and Pennzoil or no beer and Redline, I guess I can see where some would sway to the cheaper oil.

Oils on BITOG are primarily judged by oil analysis. Redline hasn't shown great results across the board. Redline does not believe oil analysis is a good indicator for comparing wear among motor oils.

azfireguy79: i use redline MTL for the manual transmission fluid and 75-90 in the differential with no complaints. on mornings when it is below freezing, the first couple of shifts, particularly from 1st to 2nd requires a little more effort, but that is no big deal. it is cheaper than the fluid the BMW dealer would sell me and lots of folks have used it without any complaints, so that is good enough for me.

i've never used their motor oil, but i don't have anything against it. i get the impression (rightly or wrongly) that redline is an oil that is marketed towards people who race or autocross. i mean, it isn't something i can just walk into autozone around here and buy.

many bitogers complain about the price of redline engine oil, compared to sale prices of dino and synthetic oils. then again, it seems like a fair amount of bitogers are using synthetic oils for 3,000 to 5,000 mile OCIs here. go figure...

New here ,What is the low down on Royal Purple?I would pick up 5gal bucket from RP plant for $68.00.many years ago.Now they sell it at auto parts stores. For $7.00qt.I buy Mobil 1.Why buy Redline or RP unless you race?

Please offer us some "Red Line-Hatred" links? Who's been hating on Red Line?

The closest I've seen to oil hatred on this board is Royal Purple. But I'm not sure it's hatred - or just disgust over their high pricing.

I like their line of straight weights. Going to try the 40wt in the GN when it's up and running again.

I have never tried RL products. So I consider myself neither lover nor hater. I consider myself in the "ignorant" category. I guess that's because I'm not aware of any advantages to using RL products. Does anyone know of any advantages to using RL?

I would suggest that Amsoil PAO would be no more expensive than M1 (maybe cheaper) and you will be SURE of getting PAO.

Redline is awesome, unique, but has it's place.

Not surprised when I was told RealTime Racing used Redline SAE 40 in their race TSX. Saw the jugs myself, oneis visible in red on the right of this pic. Great choice in a ballsy oil.

Also there has been debate over seal compatibility with Redline. Coming to mind a particular story involving a Toyota truck from a while ago.

I am a Redline lover BTW, grew up with my dad's stash of cases of Redline oil, MTL, ATF, gear lube, and fuel system cleaner and it went in ALL our cars. Never any issues.

It seems to be hit or miss with RL. Joe Gibb's tested Redline's 30wt racing oil and found it to be worse than Mobil 1 R 0w30 in their 800 hp Nascar engines. It also didn't produce as much Hp. JG website has the graphing data. This was during their quest to find a better oil that what most were using (M1). According to Lake, Mobil 1 was the second best oil after JGR oil.

Good to know its just the few on here that dont care for Red Line. Just recently I read a post about there shock proof gear oil in a LSD and it was heading down the "blame it on the oil road and of course Red Line came up. I havent seen alot of bashing as of late, and most of it is because of the all mighty "UOA" and people that think it determines everything. I am a big believer in that there really is no "BEST" oil but there is a excellent oil for each specific application. I buy what works the best in my application regardless of price. And I really dont care what a racing team uses. My father raced Unlimited Hydroplanes for years and they always had a 55g drum with the oil company name on the side and a different oil inside. Thanks for the responses!

Buster,

Do you think they are running a special M-1 blend that is made especially for NASCAR? I guess it would be hard to know for sure without some inside info. My dad used Mobil 1 in a turbine engine hydro(not really, it was the jet oil made by mobil) but the Mobil 1 sticker was on the side of the cowling

AzFireGuy, yes there were running Mobil 1 R nascar oil. It was bascially the same as M1 0w30 with a trick base oil and more ZDP for flat tappet cam engines. I think your comments are correct about 'best' oil.

It really shouldn't surprise anyone that M1R did produce more Hp than RL due to it's low HT/HS of 2.99.
