FYI (yeah, again):

Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, our oils are designed and suitable for extended drain intervals, once past warranty we recommend a drain interval of 10 to 18,000 miles or at least once a year. The lower molecular weight esters tend to be hydroscopic, our oils use higher molecular weight stocks that don't exhibit that tendency. At operating temperatures moisture from combustion is released as the case with other stocks.

I don't have a clue what you are trying to say, beyond English grammer; but what does your effort have to do with informing members concerned about POE (group V) synthetic oils attracting moisture, and the fact that Red Line does not fit in with their concern?

Redline's reply is correct. Hydroscopic refers to a liquid's capacity to absorb and solubilize water. Higher molecular weight esters will only solubilize 0.1 to 0.2% water, and even this will be released under vacuum and heat.

I suspect the reply from Redline came from the marketing department. Had it come from a chemist, he or she would not have a substituted a word absent from the dictionary. Many consider specifications from scientists more creditable than those from the marketing department.

It was from Dave and I believe he wears several hats. I don't know off-hand if he is a chemist but he seems to be much more involved beyond just marketing.

There is a problem that I see over and over again, we read articles etc. that we have no idea about the subject and then base assumptions on subjects we have no idea about . I am not knocking anybody and I do the same. "though I try not to" . Millions of people use Redline,Amsoil,Pennsoil etc. etc without any of the supposed problems that we read about in articles.

Dave is a chemist and formulator, and worked for Lubrizol before joining Redline in the 80s.

This is the question I posed to Dave:

Dave,
In regards to my usage of your 5W-30, I make mostly very short trips, in town. I have heard that POE based oils are suseptable to water contamination from this. Knowing that you must have an additive package to combat this, can you be more specific as to what is used and how effective it is with extended oil change intervals?

My question was driven by BITOG member's statements about this concern. I believe his reply is clear and not ambiquious.

I have used nothing but Redline oil for the last 150,000 miles in my q45 32 valve DOHC V8, and have never had any problems....in fact the engine runs like new at 235,000 total miles.
