Those engines burn oil, unless they don't have oil.

Doesn't matter what brand/viscosity you choose.

That's what my college roommate learned about CH47 Chinook helicopters from the army. If the transmission isn't leaking it's out of fluid.

Did you happen to go on a long trip on the freeway at sustained higher speeds? That's when a lot of cars tend to burn the most oil.

BMW DME will hike up engine temperature at low load in order to improve efficiency. The cooling system is very sophisticated.
On track for example, it will try to drop coolant temperature as low as possible.

I think dealerships now carry only LL01FE. He is better off with Mobil 1.
Also, not sure why he is assuming oil cannot last 5k.

I think the OP is saying that he's experiencing consumption now that he's doing his own oil changes rather than the dealership. I thought it would make sense that if he wasn't consuming the dealer oil then perhaps he should use it instead.

Maybe that's it? My commute is 45 mi 3 days a week. At 5 am I am driving at pretty moderate speeds but at 2500 rpm.
Still doesn't explain why I get much higher consumption after 3-4k miles though.

I'd switch to Mobil 1 or Castrol Euro. Their 0W/5W-30s don't get consumed in our BMWs or Mercedes' during 5k OCIs, though they are older and higher miles than yours.
Both cost much less, easier to get, meet all the BMW requirements.

I would run Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 in that engine probably, or perhaps the Mobil 1 X2 5W-50.

Any codes? Electronics on the water pump and thermostat, as well as some other things, are usually in the same line with the oil sensor. If one thing has an issue, it might affect oil reading.
Or, oil consumption with that specific oil picks up after some time. You can try Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40. It has a very low Noack (evaporation loss) between 5-6%.

Yeah. PPE is GTL based, has hight HTHS (3.8-3.9) will run cleaner as GTL base is very pure.
Will be more shear stable.

While I don't own a BMW, I have the same oil consumption issue. My wife bought her chevy equinox with 35k on the clock and it was using 1 qt of oil every 750 miles. The same as your BMW. Brought it back to the dealer, and the said it needed a ring job. And they would gladly do it if we paid for it. I was using the recommended dexos oil at the time and it drank it like water. I wasn't about to pay for a engine rebuild on a practically new car, which we know it's prior history. So I started running oil not recommended by gm, and the oil consumption went way down. It calls for 5w30 wt, but I started running 10w40 in it. Now, I may have to add maybe 1/2 a qt,every 1200-1500 miles depending on how I use it. I would experiment with other weight oils, way before spending any money for engine work on a 12 year old car.,,
