'14 BMW M5 110k. I have had a bmw oil change package for a long time and have been doing 4k oil changes between bmw recommended intervals. Recently I decided to do oil changes myself but my oil doesn't seem to last that long.
I have been running liqui moly 5w40 and consistently at about 3k I need to add oil every 500-800 miles. I finished my stock of liquid moly and decided to give Mobil 1 euro 0w40 for this interval. I'm not trying to extend drain intervals, I'd just like 5k between oil changes. I have never sent oil to a lab but just assume it is spent when I need to add makeup oil so frequently.
Is there an off the shelf 5w40 or 0w40 that won't "break down" before it hits 5k? Pennzoil, castrol and Mobil 1 are easy to get my hands on
Regards,
Matthew

makeup oil might be:

valve stems?
faulty pvc?
weak rings?

have you considered stepping up a grade? it's not a fix but why not throw in Mobil 15W-50, heck even 10W-60, see if it slows down consumption. but eventually you'll have to find the root cause.

i would stick to Mobil 1 0w-40 euro if you're not a fan of going up a grade.

Adding makeup oil, does not mean your oil is spent.
It just means your engine is burning/ or leaking oil.

You would need an oil analysis to come to the conclusion that the oil is end of life.

Two minutes of googeling on the S63 engine results this:

OIL CONSUMPTION SPECIFICATION
All BMW engines (excluding Motorsport) can consume up to 1 quart of engine oil per 750 miles at any time.
Due to the increased engine power, all Motorsport engines can consume up to 2.5 quarts of engine oil per 1,000
miles at any time

All BMW Motorsport engines (“S” engines) 2.5 liters per 1,000 miles

Engine oil: Topping up (N63)
When one of the above vehicles displays a message to add 1 quart of engine oil, BMW recommends adding 2
quarts of engine oil instead

If you want anything that is "longer lasting" you could look at HPL/AMS. But don't expect the consumption to reduce.

Frequency isn't as important as quantity. I could be adding a tablespoon every 300-800 miles and it isn't an issue.

How much are you adding at that interval?

It is S63 engine. It is not oil, it is, well, list of things starting with valve stems.
Mobil 1 0w40 is good option.

I was adding nothing till I hit 3-3.8 k then a liter every 5i00ish miles.
I am far from an oil expert but I can't rationalize why is need to start adding oil after that mileage.

I will just leave this right here............my Son owns a BMW so...............

Fortunately-he can do about 90% himself. He just pulled off the top of the motor to replace the leaking valve cover gasket. He saved himself a $1,000.00 labor from the shop. BMW's gaskets that leak come standard from the factory!
Depends which ones, but 100,000mls is time to change.
Mine lasted 132,000 without leak. Had to replace it bcs. broke brake line while upgrading brakes.

You could just buy the oil from the dealership. I suspect you were always burning oil (Feature of the S63) and you didn't realize it until you went from 4k to 5k OCI.

I think dealerships now carry only LL01FE. He is better off with Mobil 1.
Also, not sure why he is assuming oil cannot last 5k.
