I'm going to take over my mom's oil changes. She's got around 130K on her Honda. To my knowledge she's been doing the 3K mile, conventional oil change. She only puts about 4K miles per year on the van (she's 69).

I was thinking about changing to either Mobil 1 Full Synthetic or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic 5W30 and go with an 8K OCI. Or should I bother with Synthetic and just stay conventional? If so, what brand is best for a Honda engine (never owned one).

Thanks!

You already use the synthetics mentioned in the 2cars you take care of. Both are good quality oils and either one will work nicely in that engine for 8k miles. Just look for a good sale of either at your parts store and you are good for a 2 year change interval.

True...just didn't know if there was anything specifically recommended for her van. What about filter? Was considering either a Mobil 1 or Purolator.

Use the honda framette with the leak free P-bas gasket; if there is room you can use the s2000 filter, its bigger but that may not be an issue in Te-has. Hondas may "run on anything" but there is still fair oil and then great oil - some run well and some run mediocre. The V6 has its issues.

Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and a Fram orange can every 5000/1 year and be trouble free. If you know whats good for her Honda you won't extend the OCI past 5000.

Heard you can go for ever on OCI with Honda engines (I'm on an 8K with my Tribute per Blackstone...even had a few 10Ks in there). It's the transmissions that are troublesome.

Stay with conventional 5w30, with an OCI of 5000+/- or once a year.

Oil: PYB, QS Green Bottle, or Mobil Super 5000.
Filter: Fram Tough Guard

Note; All the above can be purchased at reasonable prices at your local WalMart.

Former 2001 Odyssey owner here. Honda recommended 7500 mile OCI on conventional 5w30 under normal service. Severe service halved the interval.

Be sure to keep up on ATF changes - Honda's transmission design in that era of Odyssey left a LOT to be desired.

Oddy owner here. Use Maxlife 5-30 change 4-5,000 miles or 6 months using your preferred filter I'd use Fram extra guard also known as the orange can of death by most people who don't know what there talking about. The oddy can be hard on oil if you short trip it. Oh and ya a single drain and fill with Honda DW1 every 15,000 miles is good preventative maintenance or Maxlife ATF if you don't mind the slightly firmer shifts. Also had good luck with castrol import multi atf

For 8k, use the cheapest synthetic on sale. for the filter, use Carquest (both the red and blue filters are acceptable), Wix/Napa Gold, Fram Ultra, M1, or Purolator P1 or synthetic or the new Boss.

Sometimes Napa has the Platinum filter for the same price as Gold. In this case, definitely upgrade to the Platinum (which is a reboxed Wix XP)

my accord has over 500k on original motor and trans. as far as the motor goes, I've used everything from super tech to syns like PP and m1. doesn't matter. what does matter is the timing belt and drain/refill the trans. also
clean your egr ports if they haven't been ... guaranteed blocked solid

use what is highlighted in red. see sig, I am on a Pennzoil UP swig now and it is fantastic oil. +3.4 mpg average with Shell plus gas over 3 full fillups now!

Well, Wal-mart being out of the Pennz Ultra was the deciding factor on going with Mobil 1.

I notice that NO ONE offers up the Mobil 1 filters in these threads. I've been using the Mobil 1 filter with my Tribute for the last 50K (8-10K OCI) and get solid results from Blackstone.
I order them from Amazon, to include a Mobil 1 for my mom's van. Am I missing something?

I'm going to try a 7500 OCI, then see what the analysis comes back with. Blackstone did tell me that time was completely irrelevant, (mileage is the only factor), so we'll see next summer when she finally hits the mile mark.

Thanks for all the responses.

I still see no error analysis.
