Rear end repair quote

Alan's Gearworks in Clearwater, FL rebuilt my 07 F150's 8 8 differential 3 times. It kept whining after being rebuilt. Come to find out the whole differential was twisted just a bit throwing everything out of spec. They installed one of their complete differentials and everything was fine. They only charged me for the install.
I put the wrong year model. It was my 1997 F150.

I thought you were referring to a different “rear end”, but now I realize you are referring to a rear axle.

I’d find a good local shop that specializes in axle repair. I wouldn’t go searching for “rear end” shops because you might discover a totally different type of experience.

At first I thought this thread should be in off topic or humor. A few years ago I started a thread about the clunking noise when going from drive to reverse in my old Sierra and titled it "rear end slap" based on what my mech told me and didn't realize the humor in it until afterwards.

Have you checked the lube level? This is an expensive noise to fix. However, it will probably last quite awhile if you drive it moderately. Was it fun? I knew a guy who would blow up a rearend every Friday in his '56 Belair. He had access to a lift and air tools , so it was easy. It would be a doable back yard project. Just a lot of hard, dirty, knucklebusting work.

yes, changed out the gear oil and put Valvoline syn back in, the noise stayed the same.

Dropped off the Mustang at a Transmission shop last night, waiting for their call this morning to see what they say needs done and a price estimate.

I bent the rear end in my f-150 and paid $1800 for a used replacement housing and have all the internals swapped over since it had been re geared. Differential shop is the way to go for long life. Also are you sure it’s the bearing and not just a seal or the plastic seal guard? That is a common noise issue on Fords.

Just talked to the guy at the shop. He said the teeth on the gears are pretty well worn and he said they will only put in a reman diff. total cost around $2300 installed. I think im just going to live with the noise for a while, or pick up the one at the junkyard for $650 and get a mobile mechanic to come by my house and help me get it on.

That is crazy. I set of gears, bearing, shim kit and crush collars should be under a G total. Some of the Mustang rear ends are a bit noisy anyway, but apparently you have an actual issue.
I swapped out the carrier in my F150 myself, my LS discs were shot so I bought a detriot true-trac and put my gears on it. Properly setting up the gears isn't like transplanting a kidney. It takes patience and time is all. If I ever have issues with my GT500's rear, I'll probably do the work myself.

I paid 1/2 that for new gears bearings , rebuild at east coast gear.

How do you even put a "reman diff" in an 8.8? It isn't like you can drop the pumpkin out.

I'd equate this to report to either "i don't know how to set up gears" or "i don't want to set up gears"

Get on the Mustang boards and find a shop near you that will actually fix it.

FWIW, if you're gonna swap the housing / Axle assembly Moser will build you one, even with a Detroit Locker or True Track for around your original quote. Moser > Jasper.

To get gears right without whine, isn't a job for just anybody. Had the gears changed 3 times in my ford 8.8 before it was right. $900 the first two times. wasn't charged for the second, same shop. $1200 for the third, and even then it still had a little bit of whine. New gears at every change.

Been there, done that.
They finally figured out that the differential was twisted.

Most folks don’t keep a vehicle lift, dial indicator, bearing jaws and puller, micrometer, inch pound torque wrench, and a hydraulic press for normal household tools. Even then laying under a car wrenching down on the pinion nut to properly crush the crush sleeve is dangerous in that manner. Can it be done? Yes. But most of us are smarter than that.
