Rear end repair quote

Took the Mustang to my local Ford dealer to get the airbags recalled and a new state inspection sticker. Told them to check out the noise in the rear end, he said the pinion bearing is on its way out and they want to change out a couple of things (the gears are all OK), total cost $2672.

This is not a repair that I can do, should I take it to a "rear end shop" or would any decent garage do a good job for less than $2672?

If I bought a used rear end, how hard would it be to remove the old rear end and install the used one? I have never done a job like this before.

I would recommend East Coast Gear in Raleigh NC. They did good work. Complete rebuild, including axle bearings, new gears on the rear of my avalanche, no where near $2600, probably 1/2 or a bit less.

After a second opinion, get another rear end from a boneyard and have someone install it. That would be much cheaper than fixing your existing one.

I agree 100%. Prperly setting up a diff requies a unique skill set and patience. I would go on to some mustang forums and aske about shops in your area. $2600 sounds really high, I had the diff in my GTO blueprinted, had a eaton positrac put in, and paid 2k including shipping from texas to california there and back.

Don't take it to the stealership- a rear end gear shop will probably do a better job since that's all they do and the tech at the stealership won't have near the experiance- don't pay him to learn on your car.

Those guys are smoking crack and then some. A brand new Moser 9" is only 2600. A good used is a under 200 and it is a very easy job to swap out.

Raleigh is a bit far, found one at a junkyard nearby for $900....it better have really low miles, but it is a 2007 GT so should be a fairly simple swap.

The labor can be intensive on this. But around here the going rate is around $600 to rebuild a differential, plus parts. If the gears aren't chewed up, a set of carrier bearings and pinion bearing would have you out the door for well under $1000.


Or find a junkyard unit.

Alan's Gearworks in Clearwater, FL rebuilt my 07 F150's 8 8 differential 3 times. It kept whining after being rebuilt. Come to find out the whole differential was twisted just a bit throwing everything out of spec. They installed one of their complete differentials and everything was fine. They only charged me for the install.

Diff rebuild estimates add up fast once you need a carrier, ring and pinion, or axles. Ford will only offer a complete rear end for a couple years, and believe me I get chewed out about that regularly.

Find a local shop and ask how much to install a used one from LKQ.

Swapping a diff is really easy. It's like four control arms, remove the brakes, shocks and driveshaft, that's about it. However with that said I'm not really a fan of junkyard stuff for this like this because chances are it will eventually have the same problem you are currently dealing with, unless you know it's really low mileage.

Replacing a pinion bearing isn't really for a DIYer but it's a piece of cake for a driveline shop. You can probably change all the bearings in the rear housing/carrier, replace the seals, get it all set up again for $800 or so I would imagine. I would also get the trak-lok rebuilt (new clutches) at the same time, or if you have ever had any desire to upgrade gear ratio to 4.10 or something like that this would be the time to do it. You can also upgrade axles and carrier/LSD if you want to but now you're getting into a lot more cash.

I've never paid more than $250 to be have gears put in any 8.8 rear end. Swapping the whole rear end is super simple, can be done on a lift in less than an hour.

But a simple pinion bearing swap shouldn't cost a lot. As long as you keep the carrier shims.in the same place, it will go back together just fine. All that is needed is a new bearing and pinion nut, lube and gasket, though I never use a gasket. Never had an issue or a leak.
