Auto RX may not touch the deposits on the filler cap. I doubt any of the flowing oil touches those parts. Those deposits are likely caused by vapor deposition.

Right,I understand that. But why is the oil filter empty? I was told by many people including Auto RX instructions that the oil filter fills up with loosened up sludge. There was not one bit of gunk in my filter. Also look at the varnish inthe oil filter housing that gets constent oil flow. It should becoming clean by now.

Seems to me the OP followed directions, tshiiiiiit happens. When your done with A-Rx give MMO a shot, 1 qt for a full OCI just like they suggest, you might be pleasantly surprised.
Not knocking A-Rx but I'd certainly give MMO a shot, especially now.

Every Volvo that comes into my dealer looks like that under the cap!
It's nothing new.
However, when I bought my S60, it had about the same amount of buildup as you have on your XC70. I have been running GC 0w30 since I bought it and it is almost shiny. The varnish that was on the oil filter area is completely gone. Everything is silver now.
I recommend you just use the GC, it will clean up that stuff.

Looking at all that garbage under the fill cap I would think the filter would have weighed a ton based on what I've read here. Mine came off light nothing different about them, but I have a feeling my engine was clean. This one appears to be a mess from what little we can see.
