Question on Auto Rx...is it working?

Auto RX may not touch the deposits on the filler cap. I doubt any of the flowing oil touches those parts. Those deposits are likely caused by vapor deposition.

Right,I understand that. But why is the oil filter empty? I was told by many people including Auto RX instructions that the oil filter fills up with loosened up sludge. There was not one bit of gunk in my filter. Also look at the varnish inthe oil filter housing that gets constent oil flow. It should becoming clean by now.

You did it all wrong!

Or maybe you need a few more applications.

I followed the instructions to the T.

So did I.

It's gotta be your fault. Just sit back and wait.

Of course, you can just presume the ring lands are now sparkling clean. Take a little leap of faith!

You didn't follow the instructions if you used Mobil 1 5W-30 T&SUV.

Look it up. I followed Terry's advice. There is nothing further to discuss, especially not with you. Go ahead, tell Chris what he did wrong or how it actually did work.

Just disregard what I'm saying. Every intelligent person knows that ARX worx if you worx it. lol (I almost never use "lol" -- I reserve it for special occasions). Besides, I have already lost all my credibility and deserve no respect. lol

No noticeable improvement with LC20 on the two vehicles I used it in.

Seems to me the OP followed directions, tshiiiiiit happens. When your done with A-Rx give MMO a shot, 1 qt for a full OCI just like they suggest, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Not knocking A-Rx but I'd certainly give MMO a shot, especially now.

My $.02

Looking at those things doesn't tell you much. You'd need either oil analysis or a peek into the engine to know for sure.

It's supposed to dissolve gunk, not carry it away. Whatever it carries away will be too small to see, even on the filter, unless the problem is REALLY bad.

Now, this is a good question. I'm interested to hear the answer. Have you asked the company?

Every Volvo that comes into my dealer looks like that under the cap!

It's nothing new.

However, when I bought my S60, it had about the same amount of buildup as you have on your XC70. I have been running GC 0w30 since I bought it and it is almost shiny. The varnish that was on the oil filter area is completely gone. Everything is silver now.

I recommend you just use the GC, it will clean up that stuff.

I've read reports of people having clogged heavy filters, people having to change filters halfway through the clean as well as the rinse phases. What happened here? Looking at all that garbage under the fill cap I would think the filter would have weighed a ton based on what I've read here. Mine came off light nothing different about them, but I have a feeling my engine was clean. This one appears to be a mess from what little we can see.

This is exactly why I use somewhat different terminology. The first half I refer to as a "treatment" phase because you are essentially treating the sludge and gunk with the Auto-Rx. The second half I refer to as the "rinse" phase like a lot of people do. Both halves result in a CLEANING APPLICATION.

FWIW...

These pictures are before the Auto Rx cleaning but the filler hole and dip stick are totally unchanged. They still look exactly like they did before Auto Rx.

I thought they would be a little cleaner at least! I followed the directions to the "T". I'm still going to do the 2nd cleaning cycle after the 3,000 mile rince. Hopefully this will be a little cleaner soon!

What is the weight of oil spec'd for this vehicle? Why not try a run with Mobil 1 to see if it does anything?

If you check out buster's thread, you will see pics of my filter after my first run with M1 5w20 in my '02 Expedition. No magical additives, just good oil.
