Ouch...one thing ive always learned, before buying a used car or truck take a peak under the oil cap.

After your rinse phase you might consider running Redline oil. That is Ester based, has good cleaning properties and can handle turbo temps.

I know this, I just like to throw that in when the sludge issues are pictured from this or that engine with a clogged PVC. Some newbie always shows his lack of reading and study with a reply about wax/paraffin. My favorites are the ones that tell of some mechanic who says every engine that's failed in the 30 years of his illustrious career at Goober's Garage was running Pennzoil.

Here's the truth. The two most popular oils were QS and PZ "back in the day". Any and all failures ..sludge ..whatever.. probably had one or the other in the crankcase at the TOD (time of death). Naturally, these stories tend to ignore the 10's of thousands of units that the story teller DIDN'T see grenade ..sludge ..whatever ..that were using the same oils.

I did two Rx treatments on a Saturn a few years ago. The dipstick had a lot more dark varnish than your photo shows, and it did come clean after either the first or second rinse.
The original was from indiana and I'm in Colorado. He should be slapped for running oil that long in a turbo. Sludge aside this engine in my Volvo XC70 runs extreemly well! It beats my LS1 Z28 off the line and stays with it up to 60. For a heavy station wagon this thing is super fast. Idles smooooooth and in the 1st 2,500 miles I have owned it it has burned ZERO oil so I can't complain to much I guess!
Pennzoil is one of the very best dino's you can buy. It's paraffinic not paraffin. It's like slack wax is not wax. Spend some time at BITOG and learn about oils and what suits your engine/driving style

Probably 100%. Basically the service and service interval were mismatched. In some cases there may be no service interval appropriate for the oils of that era

I work at an independent Volvo shop, almost every newer one that comes in looks like that under the filler cap/dipstick...even the ones that are serviced by the book. The problem is the long recommended oil change interval, which is every 7500 miles on conventional oil (even for turbo models). It's hard to convince people to change it sooner, because they think they are already doing good by following what Volvo says to do. The customers that use synthetic or do an "in-between" oil change with conventional typically don't have the buildup under the cap.
