Bought a Purolator L16311 cartridge oil filter for the Corolla. Went to install it, and it does not fit. First, it is a little taller than the OEM. Second, it has plastic end caps that somehow prevent it from sliding the whole way in. It was sticking out 1/4 inch more than the OEM.
I chose to put the OEM back in (5000 miles) until I can get a different filter.
Ever heard of this?
Could I run the OEM another 5000 miles or is that pushing it?

I agree. All my filters, spin on for LS400 and S2000 or cartridge for E430, are used for more than 10k miles. If your engine is in good condition, which I think it is because it is about 1 year old, then oil filter doesn't loaded up with debris after only 5k miles. Use it for another 5k miles without worrying.

I had trouble with a purolater pure one AIR filter for the mustang- I thought I was going crazy, working on install for 45 minutes. -Got frustrated enough that I returned it and bought OEM -took two minutes.

It was my only beef with Puro - every other filter has been A+

I emailed Purolator with very specific info about how it did not fit. It took them 5 days to respond, and all they said was it is made to tolerences within specs. Didn't offer to check it, nothing. Very disappointing. The Supertech folks were way more responsive when we as a group challenged them.

The oem filters are good for 10K miles. Nothing to worry about.

If your looking for something different, or more convenient then the oem filter.

Fram makes a good cartridge filter. However, i don't like the supplied o-ring that comes with the microguard filters, but the actual fram maybe diffrent.

On the off chance (rare) that we run out of a cartridge filter or don't have a particular size, we usually order a wix filter, at the dealership.

OEM will go 10K fine.

FWIW, I have used the WIX application filter for my 2010 Corolla and it fits fine. I will say though, that the OEM filter is a tick better than the WIX in terms of quality. I have a couple more of WIX filter to use up but will go back to OEM's after that.

I just installed the Purolator made PH6311 (ProMotive) cartridge filter in my '10 corolla and it fit perfectly. Must of been a bad one...

I bought two Toyota branded filters for my Prius today at the dealer for $4.95/each. At that price, I will using the dealer part-- doubt the Purolator one was any cheaper.

However, I noticed that the Fram replacement filters seem to have a lot of glue on each end of the filter to help with rigidity. Was the Purolator one the same way?

Nooo, you must have gotten the one good one.

And somehow comparing the response of Champ to a defective stamped centertube involving multiple applications to one Puro application in a Corolla response, doesn't seem quite the same to me. And even though the Champ filter centertubes were not stamped as designed (all slits open), Champ said they posed no issue, and would function to an 'acceptable level'.

I betting that someone switched filters between boxes to save money. You need to check before you buy....if you are not familiar with the filter you are buying look at least several of them to make sure you haven't gotten a box where someone switched the filters in them! Happens all the time . Cheap people cheating to save a dollar.

+1 on that, seen it many times. You really need to be careful, people switch them all the time!

You and I are in the same boat. I recently removed a Purolator filter from my '09 Corolla and it did not look pretty. The filter appeared to be crushed after I tightened up the cap.

I bought a Wix filter and probably will stick with them.
