I guess if it don't flow very fast it won't tear.

You sound like a broken record wrt the new center tube slit design... they aren't the only ones with that design. Must be an oil filter company conspiracy to reduce oil flow and kill engines...

Bmwpowere... Its like Extra Extra read all about it !!

Who are the others that use that design? Not oem as far as i know. and im sure there is a reason for that.

You wrote Oil filter company conspiracy to reduce oil flow and kill engines. I guess you get my drift.. Very good!

Maybe the BOSS will be a great filter and become highly regarded like the Ultra and people will start dismissing all of the Tearolator problems to be in the past like they did with the OCOD. Maybe.

That's what im not liking about the new puro's, I think ill stock up on the old ones.

I noticed at my local Walmart today that all the Purolator Classics are on the very bottom self, and I did not see any of the new Purolator models on the self yet.

You can get one online at advance auto

or amazon

ebay.

lots of places

I can't find any of the new line online yet on any of those sites.

i guess with the internet people are not buying them so fast anymore its like when the oil prices go up people stop buying oil and the dust starts to form..

This presents something of a problem for retailers who may find themselves with up to six flavors of Purolator filters in their inventory. How would you like to be the guy or gal in charge of explaining the difference between those models? I'm sure some of us with a sense of humor could have some real fun with that challenge. From a serious perspective, I would imagine that the bigger online retailers would prefer to get rid of the old inventory quietly rather than explain the difference.

The Baldwin filters I use have slits in the center tube similar to the new Purolator's. I'd have to compare them side by side (to see if the slits have the same size openings)versus referring to the posted pictures, but they sure look the same.

Even the brochure does not mention ISO... what the heck, Purolator?!

Purolator must be using the same "top secret efficiency test spec" that WIX uses.

That sums it up. Purolator apparently can't tell us the micron ratings and/or test methods used to come up with their arbitrary efficiency & capacity ratings. Purolator is not a company that can just say "Trust Us, these are great", based on past bad behavior.

All that said, the Boss seems to be just OK. The plastic mesh backing might be good because it may allow more pleats & surface area. Wire mesh backing on Ultras might be stronger and more durable, yet I've always thought it limits pleats/area. Still, Ultra's efficiency and capacity numbers are real, so Fram Ultra is still my #1 choice.

Actually, I would think the bonded plastic/nylon mesh on the BOSS would cut down the effective filtering area of the media because it's bonded to the media.

Whereas, in a filter like the Ultra where the backing screen is separate, it will not take away any of the filtering area because it's not actually bonded to the media.

Those ISO standards have nothing to do with the tested efficiency. They are as follows:

ISO 9001 - A quality management standard
http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_9000

ISO/TS 16949 - A Quality management systems
http://www.iso.org/iso/catalogue_detail?csnumber=52844

ISO 14001 - Environmental management standard
http://www.iso.org/iso/iso14000

So no ... Purolator no longer states what test spec they used to obtain their claimed efficiency and don't even show at what particle level anymore.

https://www.mann-hummel.com/fileadmin/us.../W993902101.pdf

ISO Standards include product testing

Wire Mesh old technology

Plastic Mesh new cutting edge technology

Go to the Mann Hummel web site and poke around I think it is impressive this company is a world leader and they are guiding Purolator so don't worry about small holes in the center tubes or plastic mesh filter media these are the top engineers and they more know what to do than you or me in product development.
