I've used the longer filter in a Mitsubishi-powered Mopar that calls for the 14459. Works fine. I've studied the two intact filters side-by-side as best I could, and they look absolutely identical except for internal cartridge length. The cut-open photos I've seen show identical designs as well. The 14459 internal media cartridge appears to be 2" long, and the 24458 cartridge (same diameter) 3" long. The L and PL 14459 have 113 and 116 sq in of media, respectively. Don't have numbers for the 24458, but with a 50% longer cartridge, the 24458's should have about 175 sq in for both L and PL. In short, I'm convinced the L/PL 24458 is precisely an L/PL 14459 with a 50% longer media cartridge, whether in the Premium Plus or finer PureOne media.

I believe that "Honda doesn't recommend this filter in this application" is meaningless butt-covering which simply means that the 14459 is closest in size to the OEM Honda filter, and Purolator simply doesn't want to recommend anything other than that for liability reasons. Plus, the 1" longer filter may simply not fit all the short filter applications due to interference, hence Purolator's steering people to the short filter helps prevent headaches for them. In general, filter manufacturers won't endorse oversized filters for the sole reason that it opens up liability if they recommend anything OTHER than what the car maker installs, even if the oversize is superior.

I used the search feature and many posters seem to feel that if the larger filter fits (01 Accord 4 cyl) there is no problem using it. I called the Purolator hotline and they said the relief valve setting is the same (12-15 PSI) but that "Honda
doesn't recommend this filter in this application." What do you guys think. Has anyone used this filter longterm in a Honda which called for a 4459.

"Honda doesn't recommend this filter in this application." What complete nonsense. Honda doesn't "recommend" *anything* other than their own filters. No Purolator filter is recommended by Honda.

As long as there is plenty of clearance you should be fine. Some Hondas place the filter near moving suspension parts, so make sure that there is plenty of clearance throughout the full range of suspension movement. Also make sure that the filter isn't hanging further down towards the ground and thus in more danger from potholes, rocks and the like.

"L24458 has 174 sq. in.
PL24458 has 198 sq. in."

Cool! Thanks, Leanintoit. That PL24458 is one big MoFo Honda filter...

I've used the 24458 in place of the 14459 in a mazda, and in place of the 14620 in a nissan.
No problems with those and expect the same with your application!
