Pure One vs. Mobil 1 Oil Filter ?

No brainer...for your oci the P1 is the obvious choice. M1 for 10-15k miles/1 year is my rule of thumb. I have run a P1 for 6 months/15k miles before during mostly road miles/longer trips. I can get the P1 for $3 and M1 for $6 during sales, etc.

Since P1 doesn't really say how long their filters are good for, I sent the following question to P1:

Code:
I want to validate that the PureONE PL10241 Oil Filter for the Ford 2.5L I4 engine is capable of the extended oil change intervals (up to 10,000 miles) allowed by Ford under the appropriate conditions. Because all of my trips are 20 miles or more at 50-70 MPH, I will always hit the 10,000 mile mark before the Intelligent Oil Monitor registers time for a change.

Here's the response I received from James Murray ([email protected]):

Code:
The recommended change interval for a PureOne filter is 4-5K miles max. The purpose of the oil filter is to filter containments. Otherwise, dirty oil/fluid will be recycled throughout the engine.

It looks like the great filtering ability of the P1 comes at a price of earlier filter change intervals.

Actually Mr Murray. whoever he is, isn't even following the advice of the P1 website says.

"Purolator PureONE oil filters should be replaced every 3,000 miles or 3 months depending on the driving conditions - or unless otherwise specified by the vehicle's manufacturer."

The P1 will easily make a 7500 mi OCI and 1year. Having run and posted pics of a couple P1's at 1 year ~7k with no issues, I'm confident. That just happenes to be Honda's recommendation which is the latter part of the P1 OCI statement of what Purlator recommends. The first part being the CYA disclaimer OCI.

I take Mr. Murray's advice here with a largher grain of salt. Perhaps he's trying to sell more filters, or perhaps he's confusing the P1 with the Classic, which is still an easy 5k filter. Either way, no price to be paid for the OP using the P1 for said interval.

fwiw, thread sizing now messed up after posting of Mr Murray's opinion. Perhaps a sign of the quality of the information provided.

we must have very different definitions for "clearly better"...

used oil analysis with particle counts can certainly offer some insight, but I think the guy who did the testing would be pretty quick to mention the limitations of that sort of testing. That's why it's nice to have certified, repeatable tests--and I why I like manufacturers and distributors who publish this data. As I said, I think the Mobil 1 filter is probably a fine filter, but until XOM publish these results from these standardized tests, I'm not going to go out of my way to buy the filter.
No,I gave you my point, referenced the used oil analysis, and you still miss my point. My point, again,is,regardless of the filters BT used, the used oil analysis results are the same! So,just pick any one of the filters BT used, and it doesn't Matter re the used oil analysis results! Got it?
