What’s the current consensus on Mobil 1 filters?

My wife’s 2021 Jetta was due for an oil change but I didn’t make it to the dealer to pick up an OE oil filter, that’s all I have ever used. I did some light research and it seemed like the best readily available option was a Mobil 1 filter. It was surprisingly hard to find one in stock. One local Walmart didn’t even carry this size, I had to visit 3 stores before finding one. I have been away from BITOG for a while now so I’m curious what the general consensus is on the current Mobil 1 filters. It felt pretty solid in hand.

Also of note, I’m considering going 2 OCI’s (5,000 miles each) on the oil filter. I know what the label says but any reason that would be of concern on these?

Who is making these now? I know they changed production in recent times. I remember the Mobil 1 filter was really nothing special but an overpriced relabel - but then I read they changed manufacturers and suddenly they are a viable solid quality option.

What is the true story because with First Brands shutting down Fram and Champ we are losing tons of filter options!

Made by Premium Guard. Better than the Mann & Hummel ones were, but available for less $ as a CQ Premium, Microgard Select, or a Parts Plus XL.

Appreciate that explanation! Do you, in your opinion, think the STP XL filter is in the same tier as these? It seems solid and I get them very low cost.

they are both extended interval filters with better than jobber filter components but I think the stp one is designated for 10k and Mobil 20k but both still above average build and/or consistency.

People will say it's "Premium Guard", but I doubt that's actually true because they are made under Highline Warren, and Highline Warren has no connection to Premium Guard Inc (PGI) that I can find. If someone can find any connection, post up the info. Highline Warren is connected to 'Prime Guard", not Premium Guard.

Yes, the new Mobil 1 looks like PGI made filters, but Highline Warren can contract the same factories in Asia to make these new Mobil 1 filters.

Mobil 1 can claim 20K (and probably has lots of media and holding capacity) because it's less efficient than the STP XL and other PGI extended filters, which are all 10K mile rated and are 99% @ 20-25u.

Agreed and besides that, Mobil 1 doesn't deserve the privilege of having their filters made by Premium Guard.

Using the Mobil 1 M1-104A for the '25 Soul w/ PENNZOIL Ultra Platinum 0w-20 . It looks to be Premium Guard .

The Korean made Mobil 1 filters are solid. The US made are ok, but not great. The best filter I can find is the Carquest EP. It has fully synthetic media, backed, and is super well built.
