Prices for front brake job

2013 Honda Pilot needs front pads and rotors. I would usually DIY but don't have the time right now.

I got quotes from two places:

- An indy Honda specialty shop: $577 with all Honda parts. They did my timing belt last year and did a good job. They are 30 miles away, though, which kind of stinks.

- Indy shop right behind my house: $430 using Wagner parts. Have used this shop before for other stuff and they do good work.

What do you guys think of these prices?

Are Pilot brake parts expensive? I was surprised how much they were for the Outback, in 2021, when the stealership said they needed to be done, for both Subaru and aftermarket, but now the aftermarket ones have come down to normalish prices when I did them last fall.
I guess it should be parts plus 1.5-2hrs depending on what they actually do? A bleed or not?
For my driving of rural and not in the mountains I can't say I've found any difference between OEM or aftermarket brakes? So I get a midtier name brand that's reasonably priced.

For our 2014 odyssey, which probably has somewhat similar front pads, I paid $51.17 for Honda pads (plus shipping, which was spread across a number of items) a month ago. Installed them this weekend myself.

Rotors are surely where it gets expensive. I think there’s a better model of Centric rotors that is popular in the Odyssey crowd, if you don’t want OE.

It took a few hours to remove everything, clean everything well, flush brakes, etc.. at $150+/hr, I suspect you have $300 in labor there.

So I’d get the price for the rotors and pads specific, and go from there. I suspect for the Honda parts option, you’re in for at least $200 in parts, then $370 for labor, doesn’t seem terrible though maybe a little high… parts costs depending…

OE is likely Advics or Akebono, so I’d probably at least want those brands if going aftermarket…

A few years ago, a reputable shop down the street from me (at work) advertised $249 brake jobs (per axle) and this only included pads. Add in the cost of rotors, minimal add'l labor, and that job probably becomes close to $400. Today, $577 seems like a deal especially using Honda parts. The shop I'm referring to was just using parts they get from their preferred supplier (NAPA, O'Reilly, local independent parts shops, etc).

Wagner rotors are just basic Chinese rotors. If you live in the salt belt they will rust out in a few years.

The TQ pads are good, but they have other lines that are poor.

The extra cost of OEM is worth it imo, but the 30 mile one wat drive is not worth it imo, so I would vote for Wagner.

For kicks since I was eating lunch, I looked at Honda Parts Now… for a 2013 pilot awd.

$260+shipping in OE parts… makes the $577 job not look too bad at all…

I find it unlikely that you're getting Genuine Honda parts for $577 installed.

Rotors list for $143.31/ea
Pads list for $87.65.

Even with the typical wholesale discount, sustainable shops usually want a stronger margin than what those numbers would allow. You are most likely getting Akebono from worldpac and it is being marketed to a customer as "Honda parts" because they are "made by the same manufacturer." Normal aftermarket "import specialist" baloney.

thats assuming they buy all those items and not simply clean and reuse the hardware.

On that note, I would ask both shops whether they are planning to reuse old hardware, pad slap, rotor resurface etc.

And that's passing on the below-MSRP costs too. Shops usually bill MSRP on parts with labor on top so this sounds like a very fair shop.

My son called a Hyundai dealer in the Tampa Florida area for a price for front brakes for his 2018 Accent. He was quoted $880+tax, sight unseen. He was told that was in order to guarantee the job. He called me and we both had a good laugh. I checked them in October. I asked my brother to do me a favor and have another look, he said he has time. Next trip to Florida I'll do the brakes. No wonder people stay clear of dealerships.

Do shops actually replace pins and bushings, bolts as maintenance? TBH I don't unless they are sticking, just regrease and go. I make sure I get a new set of clips though as they are always rusted significantly.

That's the thing. You could be paying $800/axle for your run of the mill daily driver and not know how good of a job they did.

This thread is telling me I'm going to be doing my own brake jobs as long as my body will allow me to. 😞

You nailed it, as long as my body allows I'll be doing my own work too. Having three vehicles with two drivers allows me to park a vehicle either in the garage or under the carport and take my time doing jobs. No pressure, and no trying to beat a clock and turn out crappy work in doing so.

Not unless there's damage but I'm 100% confident that @JHZR2 wasn't suggesting they do, he was just showing a screenshot that included pads and rotors. All those other bits were in between. It even shows the caliper piston....
