Press Sleeve Question

I used the cups in this kit with my HF 20-ton press to replace control arm bushings. Since these are generic press cups, the sizes are not perfectly-sized to the bushing.

A 60mm cup was used to remove the old bushing since it was the closest fit to the bushing shell. This size was small enough to not get "stuck" into the control arm but was large enough to push on the bushing shell. The bushing shell on the control arm was slightly distorted so there were a few instances where the cup slipped and started pressing into the rubber. This wasn't a issue since I was discarding the old bushing anyway, but I noticed that the press cup was severely distorted after pressing out the first bushing.

The press cups have a small slit in them that is intended to serve as a viewing window. This is where the cup "buckled." I have never experienced this issue before, but I have also never used press cups with a "viewing window." Is this normal, or did I just buy some very low-quality cups that were made from soft metal? Or was this user error on my part?

That slit probably doesn't help. I've never seen cups like that. I wouldn't try to fix it, it'll probably snap or crack. Can you get a set with solid cups or buy some large sockets that you use for this purpose only?
 
I think the metal is likely soft on them. I don’t think you messed up. I don’t know of any that would be better except maybe that set you listed in tool time since that is a well known brand.
 
Time to buy a small lathe and make what you need. Seriously you will be surprised at what you can cobble up with a piece of All-Thread and some home spun cups.
This is the truth. I work in a shop doing truck and forklift repair and also industrial maintenance. We have a small machine shop setup. Just today I turned a piece of pipe to press fit onto the back of a big socket for an improvised seal driver. The job required seal replacement in a difficult area with the shaft still installed.
