Let's talk about these two oils and see what the pro's/con's are on each of these.

PLEASE don't include "whichever one is on sale wins" comments. I truthfully don't care much about the sales. I'd rather but the better fluid in there.

I've been recommended Synpower over PP by a member on here for the specific motor I have.

Thanks Lexus-
This is actually one of the reasons I am thinking of switching BUT I don't wanna get into that story and go off topic for now anyways.

Despite of the fact that both come in a 5W30, is Synpower thicker than the PP?

OMG...one of these questions again

No con's, all pro's with both oils. Both will serve you well, both will not cause your motor to lock up or fail, both will keep your engine clean, both will be able to extend your oci's

I know of no cons with Pennzoil Platinum. I have use it since its introduction and it has performed as expected. I even used it in a Nissan without any issues.

wow man chill.

I'm really tempted to try the Synpower because someone on here stated that it met the Nissan Ester Oil requirements. I can't find any official Valvoline info on that, but I haven't heard anyone else advertising that spec.

Nissan doesn't spec Ester oil for my VQ40, but they do for many of the other VQ engines, so it couldn't hurt? Plus the UOA look great for Synpower.

I believe PP is all Group III+ while Synpower is that plus some Grp IV according the the FAQ on there website. I have used Synpower and it was just like every other motor oil. Have used QS UD and now M1 EP, next up is 3 jugs of PU.

The only definitive differences are the add pack and starting TBN. Synpower starts out closer to 8 while PP is closer to 12, if I remember right.

This says nothing about TBN retention. There isn't enough people out there pushing Synpower to see what it can do to really compare the two for 10k+ type OCIs.

I think there is more than enough evidence to say if you are going to run 7,500mi OCIs or shorter, you'd be wasting money if you didn't buy the cheaper of the two.

I have also used both, without problems with either. Valvoline SynPower doesn't get much talk time, but I think it's as capable as any other Group III out there. A plus for me, it's even available in 0W-20 at the retail level and PP is not, at least not yet.

My VQ-40 does exceptionally well on M-1 5W-30 or 0W-30. No complaints, good clean internals, runs quietly, etc. I've no doubt wither PP or Synpower would give similar results.

i like synpower more. it makes my engines purr smoother than anything else ive tried.
check out the uoa of both oils, theyre both superb but synpower from what i see delivers constantly lower numbers but not by much. seems pp users see more copper wear while synpower has weak tbn retention but tbn doesnt mean much without a tan reading and synpower uses additives not shown in an oil analysis.
cant go wrong with either oils

boooo!!! DIFFERENT OILS ALL TOGETHER. im no triboligist but im sure each is tailored to specific purposes

im sure johnny knows what each are made of. i read some of his old posts from 6-8 years ago and it seems he can pretty much tell whats in them by the msds.

3. COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
Hazardous Components CAS-No. Concentration
HYDROTREATED HEAVY PARAFFINIC BASE
OIL
64742-54-7 >=40- HEAVY PARAFFINIC DISTILLATE 64742-54-7 >=40- ALKYLATED PHENOL >=1- ZINC ALKYLDITHIOPHOSPHATE >=1-

i cant find one on PP. this is for synpower 5/30

I think the main complaint about Synpower here was it's additive pack. Some additives were lower than other oils, but it holds good performance. The recent PDS shows calcium was boosted to 2111 ppm. Noack also has reached a rating of 7%, which is pretty low.

Honestly i think compared to PP you will not notice a difference with the life of an engine.

Whichever is on sale!!!!

With API SN/GF5, either will serve you fine for almost any factory recommended OCI or OLM.

With extended OCI, and definitely prior to SN/GF5, I would've leaned on PP. Synpower just doesn't seem to be blended stout enough for the extended negligent OCI.

Flip a coin.

lol, but is anything I said above not true. Tailored for specific purposes??? They are tailored to provide sufficient lubrication and keep your engine clean. So once again, is anything I previously stated wrong? Not trying to start a [censored] match, different as they MAY be, will both of the oils listed above NOT provide what I said in my original post?
