Hello BITOG Members:

Pennzoil here! This time, we are joined by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to welcome members to another virtual community event and, as always, continue the conversation around some of the automotive industry’s trending topics. In collaboration with API, we invite members to join a Q&A related to motor oil specifications. This month, Pennzoil Technical Scientist and Automotive Lubricant Specialist Sean Nguyen and Bill O’Ryan, Senior Manager of the Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS) at API, will be responding to questions regarding the following topics:
  • Motor oil specification development process
  • Advancements to ILSAC GF-7 motor oil specification
Key Features and Benefits of ILSAC GF-7

Working for Shell for more than 25 years, Sean has held various positions, including Lubricant Technical Advisor, Lubricant Product Research and Lubricant Technology Trainer. Sean has an MBA and B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Houston and a B.S. in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University.

Bill has worked in the transportation lubricants industry for 30 years and joined the API in 2022. He currently manages API’s Engine Oil Licensing Certification System (EOLCS), Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Certification Program and the Aftermarket Audit Program (AMAP). Bill’s background includes additive package development, engine, and driveline testing.

The thread will be open for submissions from 12:00 PM ET on Friday, March 7, until 6:00 PM ET on Friday, March 14. The Pennzoil team and API will work together to provide answers to your questions. The responses will be posted in a separate thread on Wednesday, March 26.

Both Pennzoil and the API team are excited to kick off this opportunity! Please note:
  • Please use this thread only to submit questions. If you see questions posed in other threads, please repost them in this thread to help us ensure we address everything.
  • Please understand that we will not be able to answer some questions. We cannot divulge proprietary information and only speak about our products and areas of expertise. Additionally, Pennzoil or API will answer some questions separately. Other questions will be answered collaboratively.
We appreciate the BITOG community’s enthusiasm surrounding our community events and are excited to kick off another Q&A! Let the question submissions begin.

1) Have any Shell/Pennzoil products required a reduction in calcium in order to meet the new aged-oil LSPI test?

2) Will the Shell/Pennzoil Euro oils that currently meet API SP (Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0W-40, 5W-40, Shell Helix) soon meet the upcoming API SQ standard?

3) What is the status of the updated oil gelation/filterability test? Is it being implemented as a requirement for GF-7?

4) Which of the proposed changes for GF-7 caused the most concern/push back from the auto industry or the oil industry and why?

Are the new requirements of GL-7 driven by auto manufacturers, oil formulators, additive suppliers, or some combination of these?
