PP Euro 5w-40 idential to PU Euro 5w-40

Doesn't surprise me at all. From what I have seen to date Ultra is marketing hype; people have been geting sucked in for years by it...

I fully expect the rest of this thread to mirror Bluestream's response, so here's my detailed reply.

That's a faulty conclusion before you look at the rest of the line. One product being similar doesn't mean the whole line is.

Pennzoil Platinum PDS:
http://www.pennzoil.com/documents/Platinum Full Synthetic Motor Oil.pdf

Pennzoil Ultra PDS:
http://www.pennzoil.com/assets/PENNZOIL_ULTRA_Full_Synthetic_PDS.pdf

Now we can start speculating because, yes, the numbers do look the same.

...But it's still faulty to conclude that the oils are the same.

A PDS doesn't tell you about additives, and judging by what Pennzoil is saying, it's certainly plausible that the additives are what define Ultra's performance. Plus, it's certainly possible in any case that Pennzoil simply copied the Platinum numbers to the Ultra datasheet and neglected to update them all.

If we really want to find out, we need more information.

but, no one can deny how similar PU oil's Data Number are to PP...I really hope that there is more to PU than amazing marketing propaganda...an attempt to squeeze more money out for the same product under a different name...

I guess we will only know when we start getting UAO's and be able to compare how much of an improvement has it been, and is it worth extra money over excellent PP.

UOA may start to fill out the story. We may not see all the chemistry through that...

And, detergency versus AW needs to have a balance - for the type of OCIs that most run, the difference may be in the noise.

I think at this point the term "nearly identical" might fit better. There are probably some "slight" differences that are not detectable. Still disappointing though. JMO

The common 5w-30 is not the same - much different MRV. I'm sure some euro platinum products were "SHELL HELIX ULTRA" already and you get a packaging only change on these specialty, high specification oils like the 5w-40. Can we assume the new N.A. consumption Ultra uses a high % XHVI CAS 92026-09-4 slack wax base whereas the platinum used ??? Any CAS # in a MSDS?

Suppose the Euro 5w-40 comes in at the same price point? I don't think that it was ever in wide distribution nor competitively priced. In it's case, and only its case, it may already be as good as it gets or is going to get.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, SOPUS themselves confirmed that PP Euro is the same thing as PU Euro. Other non-Euro grades are different between PP and PU.

This is my guess as well. However, my other guess is that the price will increase once it is in a PU bottle.

Someone has to pay for the startup costs.

BTW I like and use Pennzoil products. I just won't be paying for their startup costs. I'm waiting on their 0w20, hopefully it is better than their PP 0W20 and the other 0W20 oils that are currently in stores.

I want to know when this oil will hit the stores? My first OCI for my 2010 GTI is coming up in a few months. I narrowed it down to Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 or Lubro Moly 5W-40.

The Ultra is on the thin side for a 40 weight. But that might help in my city driving.

In my area, PP 5W-40 never hit the stores (although I never did check Napa). It was available at a couple of on-line places, but not commonly found in retail stores.

Yes, but is PU WORTH more than PP? That remains to be seen....

If PP is already an excellent product and it is cheaper, why switch? Because PU is newer?

You need to narrow it down to PP 5w-40 Euro or PU 5w-40 Euro. You can't go wrong with either. Flip a coin

As subie says, the 5w-40 Euro never was in wide distribution.

You are a picky bunch. If about 1,000 of you would email Wal Mart or your favorite parts store and tell them you want to buy this oil, they will put it on the shelf. Supply and demand fellows.

And, if you really want to try it, and you order your other special 5W-40 online, then order this product online. It is out there, at least the PP Euro 5W-40 is.

If not, tell Shell to kiss your butt and move on.

Personally, if I had a car that needed a European approved XXW-40 oil I would be knocking down the doors at Wal Mart and buying me some Mobil 1 0W-40

The speculation is that PP 5w-40 and PU 5w-40 are identical which is Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40. No one has seen PU 5w-40 yet, but you can get PP 5w-40 here:
