Potentially stupid question, extending drain interval

I have a 1988 Ferrari Testarossa that is going in for a major service in December. I changed the oil last October using Redline 10w50 and I’ve put around 2000 miles on the car since then. Would there be any issues leaving the oil in until December as they will have to drain it for the service? The car requires 16 qts of oil and a $160 oil filter.

I would leave it until December.

Two months past a year interval is not gonna matter much at all. However, given what you’re paying for oil, and the amount that you need, there are better choices to go for a longer drain interval.

Red line has many fine characteristics, but long drain interval and strong base are not among them.

Thanks for the reply. What oil would you recommend?

You did ask a question about what oil you should use, from looking at Redline and HPL, your best bet will be HPL. If you want my opinion you will need to PM me.

Of course a couple of months doesn't matter. I would never use a boutique brand oil in an expensive car engine, because they won't pay on an oil claim. That means redline, amsoile, hpl are out. If your car qualifies on a major US oil co. warranty, I'd use their oil. The main thing is: don't short trip the car, don't keep moving it from one side of the garage to the other. The 4.9 l tipo f-113 12 cylinder engine is not durable, by it's very nature as a ferrari. It must be babied with bulletproof maintenance.

Do you really think that a major oil brand is going to pay him out for an "oil warranty" on a 1988 Ferrari engine, or that anybody with a classic Ferrari 12 cylinder even cares about that?

Actually the Testarossa flat 12 has a reputation for being one of most durable engines Ferrari ever made. My mechanic trained on them when new and said they are almost indestructible. One of his current clients has surpassed the 300k mile mark. The gearbox on the other hand was a tad weak, mostly because of the differential.

what does the owner manual say? 🇮🇹
Owners manual in my 88 calls for 10w50. However, the very next year Ferrari started recommending 10w40, mainly because I believe they switched oil partnerships and the new company didn’t offer a 10w50.

This would be my choice - a 5W50 with excellent specs that meets Porsche A40, ACEA A3/B4, API SN/SM/CF and Daimler MB 229.1/226.3

You could go a couple of years between changes. This is the oil I'm running in my twin turbo V-12. Not quite the exotic you've got, but a nice engine, nonetheless.

Great UOA from a 10,000 mile run on mine.

Mobil 1 15W-50 is a fantastic oil for a very reasonable price. That would be my choice.
I actually ran M1 15w50 my last interval. However, I was concerned it was a little too thick in the winter. The car has two large oil coolers without thermostats, so when the temperature is below 50F it’s hard to get the oil up to temp. The oil pressure was running a bit high on cold days.

Then M1 5W-40 FS it is. :)

Besides the viscosity grade, what else does the owner's manual say about the engine oil?

For example, was there a limitation or a spec that would rule out conventional oil in 1988?

If MSDS are to be believed 5w-40 fs is 50-75% group 3, same with 5w-50 x2 fs. Not that there’s anything wrong with group 3 oils, that’s pretty much what I’ve only run in my mustang with fantastic results both on and off the track. Napa has both on sale right now for $7/quart.

If you go to 0w-40 fs that’s a 25-50% GTL + 25-50% PAO oil, and something you can pick up at Walmart for $25 a jug. 0w-40 x4 esp is similar but with less stated PAO 10-25%

I don’t know what the ZDDP levels in those oils are though, 40 and 50 weight oils can get away with higher levels and still be API SP and some 50 weight oils really have high levels even if they don’t advertise it. Castrol edge 5w-50 make zero mention of it being high in ZDDP but turns out to have as much as Valvoline VR1 which is explicitly marketed as a high ZDDP oil.
