I stripped/rounded off the front diff fill plug. I had to weld a socket to it and take it out with an impact after I heated it. This is why you always pull the fill plug first. If I hadn't been able to remove the fill plug, at least I hadn't drained it yet. Old oil is better than no oil.

In went Federated Co-op group 4 based 75w90.

Will check the front diff level soon but it went be changed unless I find some sort of contamination.

2003 Mercury G.M. W/ 40K miles. I used a suction gun to remove around 2.5 quarts of gear oil from the differential. Probably wasn't needing doing but I got tired of looking at 3 unopened bottles of Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90 which have been sitting in my garage for fifteen years. Bought them cheap when KMarts started disapearing. I will save the old oil to use in the leaky gear box of my rototiller.

Perhaps the best reason for a diff service I have ever heard.
The Redline 75w85 in my garage is calling me to service the GS...

The front diff took just shy of 2 quarts and the rear took about 3.5 quarts to get it ~17mm from the bottom of the fill hole. The rear diff was under filled, a little less than 3 quarts drained out. If you fill to the bottom of the fill hole, these 11.5 AAM rear ends will hold about 4 quarts. The proper level per GM is 17-21mm below the fill hole.
