Nokian WRG5 Remedy

I am getting these for my Civic on Monday morning, I have heard really good things about them and I loved the Nokian WRG3s that I had on my ex wife’s 2010 BMW 328i. Nokian makes amazing snow tires and all weather tires.

I currently have over 100,000 km on a set of cheap Minerva all weather tires and they were terrible even when they were brand new and were much worse on the second winter with them. Luckily we didn’t get much snow last year and I actually managed to avoid driving on any of the snowy days anyway. Those tires would’ve been scary 😬

Not brand new but continental pure contacts on the wife’s new 24 Altima and lx25s on our 18 rogue. I’m really liking continental although I was always partial to Michelin. I also installed a set of Bridgestone turranzas on my 21 Altima. I know Bridgestone doesn’t get a lot of love, but they were cheap and are actually a great tire so far. I retired my Michelin cross climate 2s that were on the rogue to a winter tire. I couldn’t take the noise and loss of mpg. I’d never own another set.

Putting some waters on the Kia Optima.

Replaced the Conti DWS 06’s on my X5 with DWS 06 +’s. Got approx 35k miles out of them, still had 3-4mm tread left.

@The Critic was giving me flak for this but just sent my dad over to America’s Tire(the DBA for DT in CA/OR) for a set of Conti TrueContact Tours(not the new 54 version) on a 2025 Camry. The factory Goodyears were toast at 22K. I blame Uber.

Set of four Goodyear Weatherready 205/55-16 for the Toyota Matrix. Great deal at 138/tire at Discount Tire, minus $80 special minus $100 rebate!

Oh I almost forgot. Minus another 5% for using the DT credit card. Altogether the net cost was about $491 all included.

I just put Goodyear Assurance all-season on the 2014 T&C. They were from Sam’s Club and cost $525 after discounts. Van has 100k miles on it. I took off Firestone Destinations that were wearing badly.

Just my $0.02

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5. Shown here next to the Nokian One A/S tire. The tire depth on the winter tire is marked in mm because in some European countries it’s no longer classified as a winter tire if tread depth is below 4mm (about 5/32nd).

Nokian has a U.S. plant but these were made in Finland.

3- General Altimax RT45 215 55 R17

Why 3? My daughter didn't heed my advice in the icy conditions last weekend and nailed a curb, putting a massive maypop in the sidewall. The other front tire is an RT43 an still has plenty of life, so I only replaced the one front tire. I think the RT43 is only 2 years old with about 6000 miles or so on it.

I had promised her 2 new rear tires when I gifted the car to her as a high school graduation present, so I did that while it was in the shop.

I also had it aligned. Thankfully no damage other than the tire, and some rim scuffing, occurred. She paid for the alignment and got 1 new tire as a Christmas present. I already owed her the 2 rears, which still had 2/32 of life left, but were dry rotting badly (cheap Kumo tire put on by the dealer before I bought the car in 2021)

So past totally worn out plus the dry rot. Definitely due.
6/32 were left on the tires, which need to be replaced at 4/32. The dry rot on 3 year old tires was the killer. No more Kumo Solus for us. They were terrible in the snow the 2 winters I drove on them, which is why I put two RT43 tires on when my daughter got the car. If she didn’t wreck it, I planned on replacing the back 2, which I just did.

Brain freeze took the original 2/32 comment as total left. I'd swear off Kumho with only 3 years useful time too. I'm driving Bridgestone as that's what came on my Honda but I'd rather have Michelin, Continental or Pirelli. Eventually.

Mazda CX-5

Out: Yokohama Geolander 91A from the factory with 26,000 miles (could have lasted another 10,000 if I lived in an ice-free climate).

In: Falken Aklimate at Discount Tire, 36-24 production code, made in Thailand

Bottom Line: great mid-tier tire (for this car which is driven <9,000 per year). Felt that I got more than I paid for.

Aklimate Pros:

Not a quiet tire, but quieter than OEM (hear A-pillar wind noise > 55mph that I didn't notice previously;

Has the 3-peak snowflake;

No surprises/negative change.

Cons: none so far (only been one week)

Bridgestone EP 300 a summer touring tyre replacing Michelin Primacy 4+ (225/55 R17). Far superior in every aspect, which is a massive surprise for a tyre nerd. Far better lateral stability, lower rolling resistance, superior handling aided by stiffer sidewall. As good or better in the wet. Can’t fault them
