Post your HOA horror stories here

Blame the lawyers. If someone drowns, who do you think their family will sue? Sure, they probably won't win, but the HOA will rack up hundreds of thousands in legal fees.

Lawyers do their job - blame greedy people who hire lawyers to chase $$$

I am just glad I didn't buy one of the houses that surrounds those ponds. We watch many of the families fish several times a week from their back yard. I can't imagine how much more upset I would have been if I paid a premium for water front property only to find out I am not allowed to fish/swim/skate, or touch the water.

In the latest email exchange I am trying to understand how close we can get. My son also enjoys catching the frogs and turtles along the edge...but he has no fishing equipment, and certainly isn't swimming.

In a fun twist, the Manager of the HOA's first name is literally Karen.

Owners are also part of the HOA. If you don't like it, organize the other owners or contact the trustees or become a trustee and have the rules changed. Basically if you don't like it and can't change it, it's because you're in the minority. If everyone wants it, then the rules can be changed. Kids drown all the time though so there really is an insurance liability.

I know, I was told the next "rotation" is in three years - by then my son will be 14, and most likely on to girls, and cars ;-)

I got a letter from HOA....your grass is dead....Its not rained much in months and 100 degrees everyday plus the water MUD sends out a letter asking to please conserve water .......
So spend 75 bucks a month or more for green grass or conserve and get a nasty letter from HOA......lots of home owners were pissed off

Like this? *do-do-doo lookin' out my back door.*

Walked outside to snap this for you, @DriveHard it's a lovely day. We did what you state. People sometimes just do it anyway? I don't know? Sometimes, I believe I see this. Guy in a black Jeep appears to be self-appointed HOA rat, most likely fancies himself one that would do a citizen's arrest. Always be careful who is watching. OK on with the pic.

The HOA hasn't been hassling us ever since a certain someone maybe stopped feeding the birds outside. I expect a post-Labor Day intensifying of that Safety and Compliance vehicle running around again. When you are on their radar, you will know and take note of who makes it a point to observe your house.. got questioned when a family member's brand new vehicle was over 20-30 minutes for some laundry.. that guy staight up acted like Neighborhood Watch or LEO.. I didn't answer his final question and made it a point to give him a quizzical look.. I do believe he got the message.. hasn't bothered us since.

Always wondered which neighbors have set up cameras. Life is good right now. If they decide to have a revenue push.. all of a sudden, maybe the side grass is too brown? On the side between the two homes... totally not our fault.. but.

If you have a GOOD HOA? Give thanks.

And I don't fish nor have any interest in that so this sign doesn't offend me. There is a pool to swim, I will not use it because apparently I need to be supervised. Hard pass.

All fish caught must must be released alive in the waters from which they were taken.

WTH. So you're just teasing the fish?
So it doesn't get fished out. Or maybe there's mercury in the fishes so not good to eat.

Geez. Every now and then we endure the HOA horror stories on this forum. Be an informed buyer for crying out loud and buy accordingly. Is that so difficult??

So what's the point? Isn't that just torturing the fish?
Some just like fishing for the sake of the activity. Like running a marathon. No need to really run these days, you could just drive 26.2 miles. But for some reason I've run several of them. Just for fun basically.

Given the pond topic above, a side story...

I used to work for a municipality (consulting) that was told by its insurer that they were going to require the City to place fences around all city owned and maintained stormwater ponds to restrict access and reduce the chances for a drowning claim. The city responded with an map showing over 600 basins, and inquired if that was to apply over all other features in easements (which would have tripled the number) and natural waterbodies and wetlands as well. There was no reply for some time... Then a "nevermind" letter.

Life can be dangerous...

I'm not one to judge, but unless you're catching fish in a net, it's not very pleasant for the fish.
Unless you're a fish, how do you know it's unpleasant? Maybe it's a good learning experience so they don't get hooked the next time.
