2005 Polaris Ranger XP, 700 cc twin, 951 hours.

Runs well under power but does not want to idle and stalls at idle. Even backfires when first giving it the gas.

New plugs did not help. Gas filter recently changed. New gas is in it. It gets driven almost daily.

I tried Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas but did not help.

Any thoughts?

Thanks a ton!

I have the 2004 600 Sportsman. I'm thinking carburetor. With mine, when I got it, I had to keep the choak on or it displayed similar symptoms. Getting on it without the choak it would bog down even when warm. Rebuilt the carb and the problem went away.

Check the tube that goes between the throttle body and the head. We had one the deformed just enough on the side where it meets the head that it caused a vacuum leak and poor running conditions.

I agree with looking at carb (if equipped) first. If all that checks out, another place to look is wiring. The wiring on all Polaris of that vintage is horrible. Actually the wiring on newer Polaris' especially snowmobiles is still terrible.
