Agreed, the 0W-xx will tend to start with base stocks that naturally have a higher viscosity index and would consequently be more shear stable than a typical 5W-30. Counterintuitive and not obvious, but true. A 0W-40 or a good 0W-30 could be a fine choice, but possibly more expensive than necessary for equal protection compared to a conventional 10W-30/10W-40.
 
My manual shows the 5W-30 & 10W-30 comparisons only. It suggests the usage of 5w for the coldest temperatures up to 100 degrees F. As for the 10W, temperatures starting at 0 to above 100 degrees F.

I typically use 5W-30 all year round here in Illinois. Can easily get below 0 (especially with windchill factor) and rarely would I encounter a 100 degree scorcher.

All the while do 12K OCIs with great results!
