Picking oil filter for severe service

A pack of six PG4612EX filters off of Amazon is ~$45.

At this point, I'm NOT planning on running VRP in this engine. It will either be the current Castrol Euro 5w30 or Castrol Extended Performance 5w30.

I'll cut the first one open at 3-4K miles. if it's relatively free of crud, could these filters go to 10K miles if I do a drain/refill at 5K miles?

i would run some VRP. then cut the filter open at 3k miles
I've already decided, NO VRP for this car. I can't monitor it close enough.

Castrol Euro 5w30, and or Castrol Extended Protection 5w30 will be the fill.

Better. I don't know of an automotive filter that beats Mobil 1's. You asked for the best. If the $11 at walmart bothers you, they're cheaper on RockAuto. On RA you have to type 'm110a' in the search.

I run the 110 in place of the 108 on a Rogue.

If you're talking about the new Mobil 1 at Walmart (under Highline Warren) instead of the old Mobil 1 (under M+H), then there are many PGI made filters that are basically the same as the new Mobil 1.

The old Mobil 1 made by M+H was nothing special, and had some quality issues. Probably why Mobil dropped M+H and went with Highland Warren.

well, there's a lot of ways to think about what is "best" in this situation when the oil is in a "severe service" interval.

Is filtration capacity paramount when I'm only running the oil for <5000 miles/4 months?

Should I think about just bang for buck? Supertech *might* be ok here, but those glued end caps were sketchy in other applications.

I guess anything made by Mann+Hummel is out, because they cut corners (I imagine ST does as well).

Premium Guard was suggested, M1 was suggested, I guess there's always the Roki/Mazda filters as well, even though they're the most expensive.

prior to a month ago, a M1 was nothing better than a jobber filter with a silicone ADBV.

Premium Guard (available on Amazon) is the brand under PGI (Premium Guard Inc), and there are other brands like Carquest Premium and MicoGard Select under the PGI umbrella. The new Mobil 1 isn't under PGI, but instead under Highline Warren, but the new Mobil 1 is very similar to the PGI made filters and per Highland Warren (I called them) they said the new Mobil 1 is 99% @ 20u.

Bosch is M+H. They're usually not sitting around on the shelf, though.

M1-108 - 3330
M1-110 - 3323

I like the higher capacity. It maintains oil pressure better, and less likely to clog up.

There's nothing wrong with Mobil's filters. Everyone has their preference. Mine is the one that holds up to a high pressure oil pump in a cammed LS that regularly sees redline, and has done so for 90k (5k OCI) with no indication of letting me down. They also have 99% first pass efficiency at 20 microns. There are many that don't achieve this.

Bosch and M+H were co-owners of Purolator, but M+H bought out Bosch's stake in Purolator back in 2013. Now Bosch is on it's own and M+H has no part or association with Bosch. Probably why the Bosch filters don't exhibit the quality issues of the M+H filters.

ok, gents. I appreciate all the posts. very informative, truly.

SO the final contestants are Premium Guard(and it's other brands, still trying to sus out what they all are) and Mobil 1?

Do you believe them?

they now have a 99% @20um but prior to that they were labeled 99% @30um. i also have a cammed LS and ran the M1 filters for almost 200k miles. have since changed to OG wire back fram titanium’s. if i ran out (never will) i would move to Carquest premiums simply out of cost and quality.

Yep, the earliest ones to get are:

Premium Gaurd from Amazon.
Carquest Premium from Advance Auto Parts or Carquest.
MicroGard Select from O'Reilly's.
New Mobil 1 from Walmart.

I wish Donaldson made a Blue with an internal bypass filter that fit the bill. That would be the best period imo.

PG4612 is the Premium Guard equivalent to the M1-110, which they list as the same number as for the M1-108. Its height is right in between. Kinda funny.

M1-108 - 2.5625
PG4612 - 3.01
M1-110 - 3.375
