pick my synthetic motor oil

Wondering if I should get some Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0w20 or Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 or some Mobil 1 5w20 since wal mart has the Mobil 1 oil for $24.97. Which syn would you guys pick? This will be for the 03' Civic that sees 95% highway driving and not much stop and go driving. Thanks in advance,

A few Q's first: What is your planned oci interval, filter choice, engine tune, MT or AT, coldest winter starting temps, driving style, typical % of GVWR used, tolerance to market churn, spouses hair color, most enjoyed music genre, tyre pressure, vegan or carnivore, political bent, military service history, cat or dog owner, house or condo, garage or no ... ... .. .
 
Stop and go driving isn't an issue, it's short trips that favour a high VI 0W-20 when the engine spends a lot of time no fully up to temperature. So if you're doing mostly long drives I'd go with whatever syn' is generally cheapest.

That said my preference would be Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W-20, them Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20.
Mobil 1 5W-20 would be well down the list since it's a heavy 20wt oil and Mobil 1 0W-20 would be preferable if you can get it for the same price..

I have been reading lately that more UK/Europe manufacturers are considering stop start running as severe service, thus all urban drivers are by default in Severe Service.

I always thought stop start was actually doing a short trip then getting out, getting back in an starting the engine again etc.

But it is apparently the action of constantly revving the engine from tickover to whenever you change gears followed by a short drive at steady revs then for traffic to stop and the process to start again.

It is logical if you think about it, the best situation for an engine is a constant number of revs at operating temperature.

Rather than a constant tickover, high revs, tickover, high revs situation.

Short journeys is another common SS situation as you have said.
 
BIGJL I am open to your choices you may have. I dont mind trying the M1 and never used Quaker State Ultimate Durability so whats your choice??

OR if you wana do some cool [censored]... AMSOIL Signature Series or Pennzoil Ultra or Mobil 1 Extended Performance with a Bosch DistancePlus or Purolator Synthetic filter and change it every 15,000 or 1 year

How cold does it get where IOU are. Quaker State Ultimate Durability is great stuff and can always be found on sale somewhere.
I was just reading a thread today about how the 0w-20's tend to be made from better basestocks to achieve the viscosity spread however the other 2 options are great products as well. Pick whatever is cheapest.

I did think about the PU honestly. I think I may give the Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0w20 a shot.

Both scenarios would be under severe service, but only one would benefit from the thinnest oil at startup and that's lots of short trips, where oil hardly ever gets to operating temperature.

Personally though, I wouldn't think twice about using any of the oil mentioned.
 
Assuming you are using the viscosity recommended by Honda I would use Mobil 1 or equivalent in a high mileage formulation. This is assuming the car has not been using synthetic oil until now. Paying more for boutique oils is a waste of money unless someone can show scientific proof otherwise. This includes Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc.

I am due of a OC in 150 miles. Im gonna run PU and a PureOne.

I think they're all great. If you wish to pick one and stick with it, what can you get most reliably at a reasonable price? If it were me, I'd be tempted on the Quaker State Ultimate Durability or PP, since those get rolled back the deepest and most regularly at WM.
