Hello again folks. Need some help deciding on oil for a 91' 2wd Chevy Truck with 5.7 v-8. Truck has like 52k on it and pretty good shape. I plan to use it mainly as back up to the Tacoma and Camry. Currently contemplating using either M1 5W30 or QSGB 5W30 or even ST 5W30 and changing once a yr. I use m1 5w30 in the other vehicles so may just use this in truck and go two or three years then change the oil, what do you guys think? Thanks in advance for the advice/help.

I run Pennzoil conventional in my K1500 now with a 5.0 (same as your engine just with a smaller bore) and I love it. Runs quieter than it did with Valvoline and I feel very confident in it. QSGB is a sister product to Pennzoil so I'd run that out of your choice.

Switching to synthetic after there's probably some sludge creating false "seals" after all these years may possibly cause leaks. Stick with a conventional.

Yeah, I am going tomorrow after work to get some oil for the truck. I think I will go with QSGB as used it in older Toyo truck that I wish I still had. Idont think I can go wrong with QSGB

Any idea how many miles would be in this OCI? If less than 3000 I'd probably go with supertech and change it once a year with a purolator filter or something inexspensive. I don't think id be fond of going any longer than that. Also what kind of trips? Short trip or longer highway trips, if short trips if try to take it on a longer trip to burn off fuel/condensation.

If you want to go two years I'd use the same M1 as your other cars, with a decent filter and just make sure to get it up to temp every so often to burn some of the crud out. I'd trust a syn for over a year but would risk it on a conventional with out a uoa which would defeat the purpose.

You going to get some fuel dilution from TBI intake. Believe me.

Plus, it's a small block Chevy with flat tappet lifters.

I'd run any HDEO you find in the standard 15w40 flavor.

15w-40?? It specs 5w-30. Why deviate from that? If you REALLY want a HDEO you can get Rotella T5 in 10w-30 but even then, why? I get the flat tappet situation, but my flat tappet 5.0 has lived it whole 105k mile life on random PCMO and has not had a problem. Any regular SN is perfectly fine. My truck is loving PYB right now, ran well on Valvoline before this, got where it was going on CAM2 even before that.

I'm a big believer in not running thicker oil than spec. It does absolutely no good.
