Pentastar Owners! Any oil usage?

We have two 2016 Wranglers, one with 60,000 miles and one with 72,000 miles and neither burn any oil. As mentioned, the oil cooler housings are a weak link. You have to expect going in that you will need that repair.
 
My daughter’s 2017 journey never did, and she went way way way past the OLM! That’s my princess for ya. That light was an inconvenience, not something to be taken seriously. Every other part on that turd fell apart but the engine was a Sherman tank and she drives more than an NYC cabbie.

I had the 2014 Jeep GC limited with this engine and ran it to 85,000 miles and it never burned a drop of oil or leaked anything. This was one of the quietest and smoothest running engines I have ever owned. As others stated you have to be very carefull with the oil filter housing and don't over tighten or under tighten it. I had under tightened it before and had it leak slightly but I tightened it up a little more and it stopped. Same scenario with my son's 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk.

Excellent. Now you just need a mild lift, 35s and some small wheel spacers ;) And cut off the stupid crash bars up front. Keep the stock rear shocks, hack off the hoe-a-row lower shock mounts and weld them back on higher up.

I'm actually REALLY enjoying my aftermarket steel door pockets and knowing the sagging nets are in the trash. Check out XG Cargo for the rear roll bar bags to store EDC items like recovery gear or jumper pack or jumper cables.

In all seriousness you might want a Tazer to do little things like permanently kill ESS and enable Bambi mode, etc
 
Oh and hopefully you've got the open rear diff. If you've got the limited grip CrapLok, get ready for the clunk clunk clunk :(

Just drive it 'til it does it, then replace the entire carrier with anything that is NOT the CrapLok

You're better off with an oil that meets Chrysler's spec MS-6935. This spec was created in response to excessive valvetrain wear. Some years of Pentastars have a problem with this, particularly with the passenger head. Hemi's had problems with wiped cam lobes.

Later Pentastars fixed this problem with design revision D. It's also important to note, concerning the importance of oil specs, that 2016+ has VVL.

ESP doesn't meet the spec.

If the oil cooler is leaking and needing replaced, make sure to use OEM O-rings. The ones that come with the metal style housings will leak because they are too thick.

The ESP specs are far more stringent. But I do appreciate the post.
 
It's not about stringent. The spec exists for a reason. It was developed by the people who designed the engines and recognized certain lubrication requirements. IIRC it has to do with metallurgy. That ESP will work in the long term may be a safe assumption, but it's still an assumption.

If the Mobil met the spec they would surely list it. In fact, it's a risk they themselves acknowledge:

Mobil 1™ limited warranty​

What the limited warranty does not cover:

Situations where the OEM required lubricant standards do not match those stated by ExxonMobil without written approval from ExxonMobil."


It's like QS 5w-30 Synthetic meets both the Chrysler spec and Dexos. That doesn't mean that any Dexos oil will also meet spec.

ESP is further market segmentation. It isn't an innovation. Wouldn't you think any modern SP oil would have "been expertly engineered to help prolong the life and maintain the efficiency of emission systems in both diesel and gasoline-powered automobiles compatible with emissions equipment?" Why not reformulate regular Mobil synthetic?

Thanks but no thanks. I’m good with ESP. I’m very up to date with modern approvals and what it takes for an oil to get each approval/manufacturer spec.
