Penrite Vantage

I had my daughter's Subaru Omega in today...down half a litre so I topped it up with the Vantage behind the seat. It's been over a year and not even a 1000km, the oil looks like I changed it yesterday. Maybe I should do those rocker cover gaskets soon, it's using more than a litre per 1000km standing still.

I've been doing blotter tests for over a year now (rip the lid off the filter box), and my conclusion is the A3/B4 oils can really be pushed on oci, it has to be into the totally unbelieveable kms and dates before it looks nasty. Other oils are toast when A3/B4 looks like new. So the Nulon went onto the '94 Laser with the B6 (MX-5) engine, and it's getting 15,000km this time, which means 20,000km before I get hold of it.

So to compare a few more 10W40 oils.

Nulon Full Synthetic 10W40 Hi-Tech Fast Flow with MolyDTc(NFS).
Castrol GTX 10W40, the USA version (GTX)
Penrite Vantage Full Synthetic 10W40, this has exactly the same tech data & specs as Penrite Full Synthetic 10W40, so it looks like the same stuff (PFS)
Penrite 10-Tenths Racing 10W40 (100% PAO & Ester) (P10)

Specs
NFS = API SN/CF, ACEA A3/B4, MB 229.3, VW 502/505
GTX = API SN
PFS = SN/CF, A3/B4, BMW LL-01, MB 229.5, JASO MA, VW 502
P10 = SN/CF, A3/B3, BMW LL-98, MB 229.3, VW 502/505

KV40 (cSt)
NFS = 101.1
GTX = 108.8
PFS = 97
P10 = 91

KV100 (cSt)
NFS = 15.07
GTX = 14.3
PFS = 15.1
P10 = 14.4

Cold Cranking at -25C (cP)
NFS = 5270
GTX = ?
PFS = 5049
P10 = 6487

VI
NFS = 156
GTX = 133
PFS = 165
P10 = 164

Zinc
NFS = ?
GTX = ?
PFS = 1240 ppm
P10 = 1680 ppm Zn (+ 630 ppm Boron)

TBN
NFS = 9.8
GTX = ?
PFS = 9.5
P10 = 9.8

Noack Volatility (%)
NFS = ?
GTX = 11.5
PFS = ?
P10 = ?

Sulphated Ash (%)
NFS = 0.9
GTX = ?
PFS = 1.17
P10 = ?

Group
NFS = III
GTX = II
PFS = III
P10 = IV + V

HTHS (cP)
NFS = ?
GTX = 3.6
PFS = ?
P10 = 4.49

I suspect the Penrite 10-Tenths is only claiming some older Euro specs due to just having a too higher SAPS level with all that ZDDP added.

Has anybody used either the Nulon 10W40 Full Synthetic or the Penrite 10W40 Full Synthetic (Regular or Vantage) ?
Not the 10-Tenths Racing, which is in a different class altogether,

I've often seem both of sale, but I've never pulled the trigger on either. The Penrite has a heavy dose of zinc (ZDDP) which is an anti-wear agent to protect the metal and an anti-oxidant agent to protect the oil. But the Nulon has a good dose of Molybdenum Dithiocarbamate (Moly DTc) according to Nulon. They say "Moly DTc is proven to dramatically reduce friction and provide increased engine wear protection from cold start to extreme temperatures". I assume the Nulon has the standard ILSAC dose of zinc (~800 ppm).

The Penrite carries better OEM specs, but the Nulon with nearly identical KV100, has a slightly higher cold cranking (CCS) and slightly higher KV40, suggesting the Nulon may have a slightly lower VII load (or the Penrite has slightly better quality Group III base oil).

I can't pick between these two (actually three - with Regular & Vantage Penrite, plus the Nulon) Full Synthetic 10W40 oils.

(Edit: I'm just using the Vantage 10W40 semi-synthetic right now, not the Full Synthetic version)

Stop teasing me with these oils, SR5! I'll soon be suffering "BITOG Indecisiveness" if you keep this work up

(No, I didn't end up getting the Magnatec... Stop looking at me like that!)

Right now your using Valvoline EngineArmour 15W40 semi-synthetic (EA), but have you considered Nulon Full Synthetic 10W40 Hi-Tech Fast Flow (NFS), or Penrite Full Synthetic 10W40 (PFS).

Specs
EA = API SN/CF, ACEA A3/B4, VW 502/505, MB 229.1
NFS = API SN/CF, ACEA A3/B4, MB 229.3, VW 502/505
PFS = SN/CF, A3/B4, BMW LL-01, MB 229.5, JASO MA, VW 502

KV100 (cSt)
EA = 15.1
NFS = 15.07
PFS = 15.1

Same viscosity, but stepping it up to a full synthetic and more OEM specs, from a synblend.
Lots of Moly in the Nulon and lots of Zinc in the Penrite.

Just asking...............

Here is a nice Castrol Edge 5W40 A3/B4 spec sheet from Wemay
KV100 = 14.1 cSt
HTHS = 3.7 cP
Noack = 11%

Given that are all (I believe) Group III synthetics, and the PFS and NFS have higher KV100 ~ 15.1 cSt, yet they are 10W oils (not 5W like the Edge), we should expect the Penrite and Nulon Full Syn to have a higher HTHS and a lower Noack than the Edge. Certainly the Penrite must be below 10% Noack to be MB 229.5

I'm currently running it in the VT and it appears to be a very good oil for it. Come next summer I may use it for the suby. Currently using Synpower 5W40 but it needs a small top up every now and then, going to change the oil today and see how it goes on the second run of it. If it needs topping up I think I'll change to maybe the 5W40 Nulon for winter and 10W40 for the warmer months.

But I do like the Nulon oil, I run the High Torque in the 80 as well.

Full-synthetics haven't really been on my radar due to their cost. I wouldn't mind switching over if either could have had for a reasonable price; the comparisons you've made here are certainly compelling.

Thanks for that PJCruiser,
I haven't used Nulon before, but I think the company has come a long way and I'm looking seriously at their products right now. Their 5W30 Euro Full Synthetic has been completely reformulated to carry factory approval for VW 504.00 / 507.00 which is a very high standard oil. Their previous Euro 5W30 was just "recommended for VW 504/507" and was Group III based, the new one carries formal VW approval and is PAO Group IV based. Big difference.

I've said this in another thread but, Penrite 10W40 full synthetic is high in ZDDP, while Nulon 10W40 full synthetic is high in MoDTC (Moly). Both are Group III, SN & A3/B4 oils.

Reading there two threads:
https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/4717918/
https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/1060919/

Mixing a high ZDDP oil and a high MoDTC oil of the same viscosity grade appeals to me somewhat.

The usual argument against mixing is that you don't know how the add packs work together, but the thrust of the two links above and the associated tech papers, is that ZDDP and MoDTC (or similar) work better together, such that it enhances eachothers ability in anti-wear, anti-friction and anti-oxidant ability.

I'm not saying my Nulon & Penrite mix is proven, and mixing is a bit silly, but I've got hankering to run these two together.

But getting back to the point. I'm keen to try some Nulon oil, Good to hear it's working for you, and that the 10W40 has reduced your oil consumption over the 5W40.

I'm just playing with 'ya.

That Valvoline EngineArmour 15w40 semi-synthetic that you are running now is a good oil and you got it at a great price. Same with my Penrite Vantage 10W40 semi-synthetic that I'm running now.

I think in Australia, the semi-synthetics, when on sale, give you the best bang for your buck.

Bloody KL31 told me of a recent sale of the new Castrol GTX UltraClean 15W40 semi-synthetic (SN & A3/B3) that was $15 for 5L. I couldn't resist. I also picked up three Wesfil-Cooper oil filters at a previous sale for $4 each ($12 each regular price). Put them together and I've got a sub $20 oil change.

I kinda have a soft spot for Nulon oils. I do like a lot of their additives too apart from their radiator cleaner, not that fussed over it. But I really like the Hi-Tech Fast Flowing Engine Oil, the dunnydore loves it seems to suit the Ecotec nicely. Need to see how the Synpower goes in the Liberty this run as to whether I stick with it or swap over to the Nulon oils.

I had a dig around for a forum post that I forgot where it was, the info was given from Nulon and Penrite techies (supposedly)from 2014. Not sure if it's still current or not but it has the HTHS ratings given.

Penrite 10 tenths racing 10w40 full synthetic:

API SN compliant
Total base number: 9.8
Cst at 40 degrees: 92
Cst at 100 degrees: 14.6
HT/HS: 4.49 cp

Penrite 10 tenths racing 15w50 full synthetic:

API SN compliant
Total base number: 9.8
Cst at 40 degrees: 114
Cst at 100 degrees: 17.5
HT/HS: 5.3 cP

Nulon 10w40 full synthetic:

API SN compliant
Total base number: 11.3
Cst at 40 degrees: 111
Cst at 100 degrees: 15.17
HT/HS: 4.18

Nulon 15w50 full synthetic:

API SN compliant
Total base number: 10.6
Cst at 40 degrees: 142.4
Cst at 100 degrees: 18.99
HT/HS: 4.76

I'm assuming the 10w-40 Nulon oil is the High Tech Fast flowing.

Thank you for that PJCruiser, very helpful.

Dunno where in Aust you are or if the Repco deals are Australia wide or not. But I'm in Melbourne and this week Repco have:

Penrite Vantage 15w-40 6l + Penrite engine flush for $24.99
Penrite Vantage 10w-40 20l $89
Penrite Vantage Diesel 15W-40 10l $39.99

Yes they are some good prices.....plus
Penrite HPR5 (5W-40) Full Synthetic is half price at $43 for 6L.

But in the end, I'm going to skip them all, I've got enough oil already.

Of interest, given we're on the Semi/Fully-synthetic discussion bandwagon here presently - Supercheap have 5L bottles of Helix HX7 10w40 for just $19.75. And a 10L of Engine Armour 10w40 for under $30. Not bad!

Yep, good price.

Looks like it is the only difference is the packaging 1 is in a 6L jug and the other is in a 5L jug.
Check the links to the typical data, specs etc below.
