Relax, I was making a cheeky comment not to be taken too seriously...go wait at the mailbox for the FedEx truck, maybe your free oil will come quicker.

Pennzoil is failing the marketing/distribution badly this time. There are 2 extremes in the oil market, thin/light weight for fuel economy such as 0W20 and 0W30, the other end is medium weight for European cars/SUV's such as 5W40. You can not find either one at local retail outlets, while there you can find a well known brands such as Mobil 1 available in all weights for 99% of all engines in North America. The price is too high too, up to 30% more than Mobil 1 is the deal killer for most consumers.

Seriously, I wonder if they are doing this on purpose to create a buzz (old marketing trick). It's either that or they really don't sell a whole lotta this 5W-40 and it's just not a high priority product.

I should add, I love Shell as a company, and I love their gasoline, but they aren't making it easy for me to love their oil. Motor oil is best sold via brick and motor. I would never pay shipping to purchase a heavy product like this via an on-line distribution channel. It's stupid.

The only heavy thing I bought online was a case of Redline Fuel System cleaner SI-1, because I could not any locally and I hear that it is better than Techron. I needed a good fuel system cleaner for my LS400 because it was almost fail the smog test in California about 6-7 years ago.

I agree with you, paying shipping for heavy case(s) of oil does not make any sense, while you can buy similar quality oil locally.

Totally off topic, but if you have Amazon Prime, you get free 2nd day shipping. At least for me, it makes getting my M1 0W40 easy!

Their selection process for who gets a case and who doesn't appears to be totally random. I emailed her in mid July and never heard back. Guess I'm sticking with M1

If I had a need for an XXW-40 European spec oil, I would buy the one that was most readily available. In my case that would be Mobil 1 0W-40. I would not chase any oil down or covet something I could not get. Shell does a lot of things well, marketing speciality oils is not one of them.

I am about to drive nearly 1K miles tomorrow first thing, race the WRX in two National Championship racing series, and drive 1K back home with the PU 5w-40. I'll let y'all know how consumption, turbo spooling, MPG, etc is different than the last similar trip with RTS/T6 in the car.

I agree with you in general, but the curious in me want to try something beside M1. With all the hoopla about the newest xW40 European Formula from a respected company I would to see if it will perform better than M1 0W40 in my E430 and S2000.

Also, more competitive in the xW40 market may make the sale of M1 0W40 go down a little, it may force XOM to improve the quality/performance of its flagship oil and that will benefit us all.

But it has to be as widely available as the M1 to make that happen. I can still get the 0w-40 at Walmart for
I would like to try it for the next oci. But I won't jump through hoops to do so.

If they want to compete with BP and Mobil for the European lube market, they better get on it. Considering we don't have PU of any sort in almost all of Canada so forth, I had better not hold my breath if I'm waiting for PU Euro.

In fairness to the oil companies, I'd put much of the blame on the dealers, and note that this is 2008 data (which isn't that old, but not that current, either). The older European cars aren't as fussy about oil and many, myself included, just went with HDEO 15w-40 or PCMO 10w-40, whether driving gasoline or diesel. The older ones didn't have all the fancy specs, and a lot of the older cars are still on the road. They simply don't need a 5w-40 or 0w-40 with a bunch of fancy European specification.

Then, we had European dealers (I'm looking at you, VW/Audi) putting in the wrong oil. That was not a small, isolated problem, either.

There also are a lot of DIYers who put in something different, either on purpose or by accident. Some have experimented with non-speced oils with good results. Others simply don't care and don't want to spend the extra money.

Debbie says....

She is out of product and waiting for more to come in. She'll send it out then. Guys who have confirmation should definately hang tight. Others who sent requests may get hooked-up too, hard to say.

It doesn't seem like more emails would help. imo, the die are cast. I always assumed Shell would make good on their offer, it's just a matter of logistics.

Did you mention to her that shipping heavy case of oil doesn't needed to be FedEx second day air ? It doesn't matter if the oil came a week later than the costly 2rd day air.

Trust me, the contract Shell has with FedEx, DHL, and UPS, shipping cost them a whole lot less than it would cost us. That 2nd day delivery probably does not cost them any more than it would cost us to ship regular ground.

This is actually why I switched to M1 0W-40. I wanted to run a 40 grade that I could find regardless of where I was. GC was even getting hard to find at my closest Autozones. Even if they got one large retailer on board, tons of enthusiasts would probably buy this stuff.
