In my Camira (1.8 ltire J-Car Wagon), I changed from 15W-40 to 25W-70 in the middle of winter (gets down to minus 7C occasionally, have some days that it doesn't get above 1 or 2C).

Mileage took a solid 10% hit.

Went to straight 30 that summer, and the mileage was back to where it was 15W-40.
 
Amazing.

I'm just curious and forgive what may hint of ignorance about living in Australia...but does one at times experience dusty conditions, for which if finding it's way into the oil one's engine/bearings might find the thicker oil films that are inherent with such heavier wt's of lubricant beneficial?

That's because the Hondas they ship to Australia have looser engines to handle the thicker oil.

The Japanese themselves are leading a push towards gradually thinner oils in Asia...
 
Helix "Ultra" has been available here for 20 (?) years. Was 5W-40, originally advertised as XHVI, and became "synthetic" after the reason for one of the stickies on this page.

Still available, but I don't think the Oz Helix is likely any sort of holy grail

If there were a way to pour bitumen out of an oil bottle, some Aussie would use it in his car.
