put PP in my new 2011 Altima yesterday for the first time and the motor really quieted down! It seems to really like this oil. Runs smooth as silk!I'm also running a Carquest Blue filter. Engine should stay really clean.

thanks for the advice gang.

oilchangeguy,
I think that I remember when you purchaces this new Altima but I don't remember the details.
Which engine do you have and what grade PP did you use?
What oil was in there prior to the PP? Was the previous oil FF?

My '04 Altima 2.5 can be a bit, oh let's say, audible! Not noisy so to speak! The engine just isn't one of those engines that are really hushed while idling(but it's not bad!). I once had a 93 Corolla, 94 Accord and my wife's Lexus that were/are really hushed while idling.

My Altima really quiets down on 10W40 in the summer time. Othewise she only gets 5W30/10W30 and I don't really have anymore 10W40. Only used the 10W40 once cause I bought several straggler qts of SynTec, cheap! But the MPG suffered a bit.

I have mixed in a couple qts of 5W20 in the winter with the remainder being 5W30 and you could hear more, including the timing chain while driving til the engine warmed up.

For my 2.5 S, 5W30 seems to be the happy medium of oils, summer/winter, when it comes to quiet(or as quiet as it's going to be) and still have good throttle responce/rev happy with good MPG.

oilchangeguy,
Another thing that I do notice with my particular Altima is...
When I first change the oil/filter, she really quiets down from whatever oil was in there before but then becomes more audible again in just about a month. I'm curious if you will notice this too!

OCG,
I also want to add, that if you have a 2.5L in your '11 Altima, I realize that although we share displacement, your engine has more refinements than my first gen 2.5. Just wanted to throw that in!

The Carquest Blue is the same as a WIX or NAPA Gold, correct?

oilchangeguy, what size of filter did you use? Did you use the spec'd shorty PL14612 equievalent or go with the slightly longer PL14610 equivalent?

I have the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder. It was a little "ticky" until I put the 5w30 PP in it. This was the first oil change at 3150 miles. Runs great!

Seems like you may have found your combo!

Keep us posted if sounds change during the OCI or if you notice any sound changes after your next OCI.

Thanks a lot for posting-

SAME car SAME oil going in it this week, mine is a 2011 as well. Only difference is that I think I'll be going with the Bosch filter.

Let me know if it burns any oil.

I know that your asking OCG but, if it's any consolation, mine hasn't burned a drop yet in 7 years. Although my generation 2.5 is known for doing so.

Is this the new SN PP?

I'm on my 6th Nissan product (3 being Infiniti G's, 2 Maxima, 1 Sentra). None of my Nissan cars (5 with VQ 6) have ever burned a drop of oil. I keep reading that Nissan engines are hard on oil... I just don't believe it. Since I only drive 7500 mi. per year (wife in her Maxima too) I have been using Mobil 1 extended performance or Edge for my annual oil change.

How do you guys hear a difference in your engine sound by ear? Really? I would think it would totally be necessary to use a sound meter.

Speaking just for myself, I think you can sort of tell differences through the minor engine vibrations that you can feel through the pedals especially during throttle.

While it's actually perhaps better described as a tactile feel (smoothness), I think it's fine to describe as feeling "quieted down" in everyday conversation.

I've had pickups, compacts, sedans. Started with a B210, am now driving an 07 versa. Bought some new, some used, some abused with high mileage and have never had one use oil between changes. My daughter now drives my old i30 (maxima) with 199000 miles on it, and it still uses no oil between changes, changes coming between 7000 and 10000 miles. My versa will use about a cup of oil after 7000 miles (PP) till i change it out around 8500 to 10000 miles. I for the life of me cannot understand all of the talk of nissans using oil and being hard on oil.....? Have used every imaginable brand of oil and filter,ie what ever is on sale. Only thing I can figure is that people are very abusive of their cars. I don't baby any of my vehicles and never have. However, I never run a cold vehicle hard..... call me satisfied thus far with nissans.......

Changes in weather (barometric pressure, temperature (density), humidity), gas quality (type, octane, winter formulation) I think have a lot more to do with how an engine runs than the brand of oil in the crank case. I think changing oil has a placebo effect.

I don't drive hard but I do like to use the performance my G37 gives me once in a while.
