I would think they'd discontinue it if it wasn't still viable. I also wonder if it would pass Dexos 1 G2 if they tried. It may not make sense for them to spend the money on it at the sales volume they have and with PP hitting that market well.

For a few performance models yes. The rest get Pennzoil "conventional".

IMHO you made an excellent decision for your 4.0L 4Runner.
Engine and oil, this is a good pairing.
GTL has good cold starting capabilities, in any case.

I remember reading here that PPPP 10W-30 is one of the most stable oils on the market due to GTL formulation and few VII. Matter of fact, as many here know, the last published NOACK for PPPP 10W-30 was 4.7% - better, in fact, than PUP 10W-30.

That's why it's my choice in my TGDI WRX. Stability under hot conditions (turbo), shear (boxer engine) and fuel dilution (GDI) should mean fewer intake tract deposits.

Why not the PPPP 10w60? (I kid)

The 10w-30 cannot be dexos certified by definition. However it's using the same additives and probably less VII. I'd run it and not worry about it

Ditto. It is only that dexos standards negate the 10wXX that make it non compliant. Kind of stupid. So many could use 10w30 year round with confidence. That is all I use in my GM vehicles and even a 10w30 HDEO in my commercial semi truck. I have become very partial to 10w30 for a number of reasons. My wife's 2006 Cadillac has only gotten a Penz conventional 10w30 even though it calls for M1 5w30. Still a keeper and no engine repairs.

It's really no different than how GM's previous numbered standards applied to 5w-30 and 10w-30, and not 20w-50 or 15w-40. That's not to say that they could never work, but GM has been specifying for fuel economy for a long time.

I'd use Ultra if it was more available but since Platinum can be found anywhere it doesn't make much sense to use it. Regular Platinum is overkill for that engine anyway as it is, no need to get technical. I don't like using an oil if it can't be found easily, if I'm traveling and need to add some oil, where on earth will a guy find Ultra? When you can walk into any Walmart or parts store and get Platinum without a problem is the way I see it.

Good choice imo.

I know people often say that on here, but in reality if you're going on a trip and are worried that you might not find the oil you need, why wouldn't you just bring an extra quart anyhow? Nobody on BITOG wants to be stuck in the middle of nowhere and have to pay full price for a quart of oil if they can bring one along from their stash that they got on sale to begin with. And if you top off the oil before you leave and then need to add more than one quart of oil on that road trip you've got other problems that need to be addressed anyhow.
