Any truth to this bad talk about pennzoil oil ?

Pennzoil is the #1 selling conventional oil in the world - by far.

It didn't get to #1 by selling a substandard product.
It didn't get to #1 because of it's mid-range quart price.

It did get to #1 because a majority of folks feel it's the best bang for the buck.

It took freebtes to get me to try PZYB, but I loved it ever since that 1st time. 10w-40 in the old Audi and 5w30 in the new RSX, freebate. I reached for it in 10w-40 again for the motorbike and if I was buying oil as-needed, it would be my 1st choice in dino (a lil tired of Havoline). I'm actually starting the CRV on a 2 year run of clearance PZ T&SUV Blend and plain Shell.

I don't see pennzoil any different than coke. Look at coke sales against pepsi, dr pepper, or whoever. I don't think it is any better or worse but they do own the market. Pennzoil must have done something right in marketing years ago. This is no bash at pennzoil. It is a very solid performer but there are others that perform very well too. As many cars that have pennzoil in them law of average tells you the sludgers are going to have pennzoil in them so they get the bad reputation.

years ago we used to run a oil in our racing corvettes. it was speed sport, you youngsters probably never heard of it but at a mechanics seminar i remember the pennsoil rep bragging that pensoil did not have to refine napha out of there oil like everone else. wasnt pensoil south pennoil co at one time?

It kind of offends me that I bring up a ligitimate question that so many people felt to post a response to that because i have been around here for awhile that it's a dumb question.
There really isn't much bad info from this site on pennzoil and It just made me wonder when I see posts of pics of engines some people swear were taken care of with pennzoil, thats all.
thanks for all the replys, I think the majority here thinks that it's a good oil and just like anything proper changes at good intervals and a sound running engine will not have any sludge build up like that. Thanks again.

That was D-A Speed Sport oil made by D-A Lubricants in Indianapolis. They are still in business and they still make this oil but the name is now Super Speed Sport. We use to run it in our old Triumph and BSA cycles back in the 50's and 60's.

Yes, years ago before the Pennzoil Company was formed, the Pennzoil brand was made by South Penn Oil Company. South Penn merged with Zapata oil to form the Pennzoil Company.

Everybody assumed that the guy with the gummed up engine must have been using pennzoil.
Has the guy been using pennzoil?

Those pics are from Feb 3, 2003. The car had 80k miles on it at the time which means the oil was from the mid 90's. a lot has changed since then. I don't think you will find sludge in any today's cars running today's oil unless you are very careless with the OCIs.

The Pennzoil-causes-sludge evidence is ALWAYS anecdotal.

"My brother's friend's neighbor's uncle had a car that used Pennzoil and it had sludge as thick as tar!"

I wouldn't put ANY faith in a story like that.
