My '05 5 speed Vibe is approaching its one year anniversary (approximately 15k miles). This past year I have used M1 5w30, GC and M1 0W-30. According to Terry, GC gave the best UOA of the three. Next month it will be convenient to do an oil change. Is it worth the trouble to keep experimenting ie give a go with PP 5w30 or the XD or should I just settle on the GC?

You definitely need to run the PP and XD with UOAs; then the five oils you've tried will vie for the honor of residing in your Vibe's oil pan. The benefits of this approach are that people are looking for more PP UOAs (aka your analysis

), XD UOAs and it will provide fodder for further discussions.

If necessary, find a sixth oil to try so that the XD 0W-30 will be run next winter, and if you really want to stir the pot, make that sixth oil a dino.

But dont forget that Olympic, a fellow

has had a couple UOA's done for XD taken from a 1zzfe engine.

That was my intention when I decided to do (expensive) UOAs, for a different oil in each change; on a car from new.

is right!

Vibe owner here. Personally, for the price, I would use mobil 1 5w30; toyotas produce outstandingly low wear with Mobil 1; XD isn't available in the US; GC is great but with gas prices right now..the lower MPG would not be a strong suit with me. Pennzoil Platinum is a fine choice as well.

Any good oil with this engine will do you fine.

My last UOA had almost no wear in 5k miles. This is with 69 cent (on sale) Pennzoil dino 5w30 oil with nothing added.

1ZZFE UOA with Pennzoil 5w30 4,910 miles durning winter

With UOAs like this, why run $4-$6 a quart oil.

I have not seen a UOA that is "better" than this one using Syn..

I've run Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntec in this engine and my best MPG has been with dino.

All of the engines I've opened up in the past were very clean, ran fine and are continued to run with no problems using good oils.

Todays conventional oils are much better than yesterdays oils.

If I can get long life from SE through SH oils, SL and SM oils are a breeze.

Party pooper Bill! You're no fun!

I have the secret but definitely unsubstantiated hope that using a superb quality syn has benefits no necessarily seen in a UOA.

With you driving only 15k a year.. You'll never find out!

Leaving the finding out to us drivers huh?

My 19 month old has 43k on it...

Take care! Bill

PS: Really, I missed out on my 1986 Jetta for ME (SIL has it now) taking a engine out to xxx,xxx numbers. I will get this car to 300k+ with no worries.

(that is if no one hits it...

Ahh but each of my 1zzfe miles is equivalent to 2 of your miles as the extremes of temp in Ontario so much harder than the that of Utah!
