Hi Folks,

Been lurking for years but have a question I wanted your opinions on. I gifted a 2019 Corolla SE to my daughter in California and shipped it out to her this past June. Meticulously maintained and I do my own oil changes like most of you folks. Did plugs, CVT, coolant change (early), new brakes with 100% Toyota parts, filters. I forgot the battery so going to drop ship a Deka to her in January. I generally buy top tier oil on sale at Walmart so M1 Extended, Royal Purple, Pennzoil PP, Valvoline and for filter Fram Ultra Synthetic. Used 0w-20 instead of 0w-16 but experimented with 5W-30 this past summer and it was perfectly fine. No mileage drop and it ran better imho.

I feel like going with a 0W in Southern California is ridiculous. She lives in San Diego, and they drive around the state so high and low desert and up north.
I have read online that in Japan and other locations they use 5w-30 or even 10w-30.

What would you folks do in this situation? I plan to send her out a years' worth of oil and filters each year in advance and I want her to at least do an oil change every four months, so I never have to worry about it. I don't care if I spend a little more money, I just want her to keep up on it. There are local shops that do the oil change for a fee with customer provided O&F.

Btw I also own a 2014 Subaru Forester 2.5 (147,000) and I have switched to 5-30 in the summer and the vehicle road a lot better and was much quieter. As you all know the boxer engine with the massive timing chains and valve bodies are very loud. I have been using fumoto for maybe 75K so with that and the top mount filter it is a breeze to change. I also do RP, M1, Valvoline, PPP and I am going to try the Valvoline restore and protect in December.

The snap is when I dropped the car of with the car carrier. Appreciate your time.

These can use up to 15w-40 technically but I don't think It'd provide any meaningful protection in daily driving given the extra loss of mpg which wouldn't be more than 1 mpg from 20 to 40 grade but still. I'd use any 5/10w-30 no problem. I'd probably opt for something like Castrol extended performance 5w-30 since it might go a while without a change. I'd use it for 2y 15k max.

20 or 30 weight in San Diego would be perfectly fine. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm in SC and all my Hyundai and KIA vehicles get a 30 weight (Kia sometimes gets a 40 weight in summer.) My Mazdas are still on 0W-20 as they're pretty new, but will be switching them both to 30 weight sometime in 2025.

Very considerate of you taking care of your Daughter with a great economic/safe vehicle. You did not mention how long you run your OCIs for? Seems like a great candidate for a annually OCI with one of the majors 5W30 with your climate.

Hey thanks to all of you. My OCIs are way too often on my Subaru due to the oil consumption issue (rings) and I like fresh oil to keep the engine quieter. My wife used to commute into Boston (50 Miles roundtrip) with that Corolla so stop start in bad traffic and drivers here are pretty bad to boot :-) I think we are up there for worst in the country. I should have mentioned I use Castrol Edge a lot also.

I'll drop ship her out some of the 3 Gallon packs of Castrol 5 or 10w 30 from Amazon as well as the filters and crush washers. I called Valvoline near Ocean Beach San Diego and they still do customer supplied service.

Much appreciated to all of you. Puts my mind at ease. We're planning on replacing that car with a new one by spring. The auto market is turning it appears.

Thanks Everyone.

I’d use M1 5W30 EP for a 5,000 mile / 6 month OCI (which ever comes first) . I don’t see Corollas as being hard on oil . While the Toyota Genuine 0W20 is great oil (dealer fill) it’s not required . M1 5W30 EP will work great in SoCal and if the owner goes a little longer than the above OCI the engine is still protected with the robust M1 EP oil .

Thanks Chris going 5-30 and drop shipping from Amazon. Cheers.

Imo you’re stressing too much about fine details. Typically, people buy corollas because they’re economical and last a long time even when abused. Instead, I would find her a well rated shop near her house and advise her on which maintenance items need to be done at which intervals. My guess is that car, even on bulk valvoline oil, will run fine for 300k+ miles.
